Unfortunately our six year experience with Bolton and the principle there mirrors the other low-rated reviews. My son was there for three grades and my youngest tried to start preschool there but had such a bad experience we pulled out after just a short time. Basically the children's feelings, education, and development aren't in anyway a priority to the principle. Thankfully the teachers (other than the preschool teacher) are better at caring for children as a whole person and not as a burden and nuisance.
I thought everything was moving along fine with my daughter’s education. She had great marks on her report cards and during conferences her teacher made the impression she was right where she should be.
Then, at the end of the year (2nd year with her teacher) we took our daughter for an interview and evaluation with a private Catholic school. To our surprise they indicated our daughter was a Full Year Behind!! Crazy right, so we had another school do the same thing. FULL YEAR BEHIND!!
Contacted her teacher and principal- what has happened! My child has spent two years with the same teacher. Remarks from them: Oh yeah she is really behind and has been struggling for 2 years. Well… Why did you not tell me? Oh well she is making progress and we have been watching her and developing a plan.
What was the plan? The plan was that we checked in with her two times a day instead of one. My other favorite comment from her principal- The test given by Catholic schools are bad and we don’t use them.
So… here I am with a child that either has to be held back to go to the school of our choice or put her back at Bolton with sub-standard procedures, or I have to pay up to $12k for extensive summer program to get her to grade level.
We would have got her a tutor if we would have known the extent she was behind.
These to so called educators did nothing and still do not think anything is wrong.
Apparently everyone at this district has communication skills as I have pushed my concerns up to district administrator level. They can’t pick up the phone or even write an email.
I used this website while I was house hunting in West Linn and feel I must take the time to report on the school my children now attend. Bolton Primary School is phenomenal! The building is older, but do not let that get in the way. They have a remodeled school library that will blow your socks off. It is on two levels with a tree house right in the middle for the kids to read under. There are rows of computers and big windows to bird watch (my first grader just finished a project on bird watching). Some of our favorite things about Bolton include outstanding teachers, a dedicated art room, music room with instruments, outdoor garden that the students tend, amazing field trips like hiking in the Gorge, wonderful PTA with activities like "Family Movie Nights" and "Holiday Crafts," tons of parent volunteering and support, a "no sugar at school" policy with a focus on healthy eating and lifestyle, an incredible principal, class looping and so much more! We are so glad we chose a house in the Bolton School District and get to be a part of such a wonderful, warm and educational school where you can feel each teacher's passion for what they do. We have two very happy children!
We love Bolton - It is the smallest school in the district and we love the community feel. Expert staff - They are all very experienced and can work with children at multiple levels very well. Strong parent support - New principal is amazing. We are looking forward to 'looping classes' starting next year (same teacher for 2 years). Also there are blended classes at the 1/2 level as an option to looping. Preschool there is also terrific!
Exceptional school with exceptional staff. Our child was given a well rounded curriculum with constant feedback and encouragement for both the student and the parent. I applaud them for their efforts and their dedication.
