When my son was 3, I decided to come home and work part time. After just over a year of full time work, and only 2 years out of college, I realized that my family was more important.
My salary and benefits were far more expendable at that point, and he was further into his career. I would think the first consideration would be who is better equipped to take care of the children (and I don't believe that's always the mom), and the second consideration would be finances. However, if salaries were significantly different, then I'd assume it was a little less flexible in the decision.
Now we're both home and both help at the school, attend functions, and we both enjoy it. I wish it were possible for every family (and each parent) to have the opportunity to be at home for at least a little while with their families. Many people would go stir crazy, but some who think they would go crazy will find that it's incredibly rewarding. And although there is a level of stress few working parents realize, it's the kind of stress that is far more manageable.43727
It was easy for us, even before I became disabled, the goal was to eventually get to a point where I would stay home to be with the kids. My husband was already making more money than I, although I wasn't doing to shabby, and he had bigger plans for his career than I did. My disability pushed the timeline way up, and we weren't financially ready yet! I didn't get disability approval until 8 years later.43728
I had been working in a factory when I had found out I was pregnant with my oldest. A few months after he was born I had to quit and find a part time job because we didn't have anyone to watch him while I was at work and we couldn't afford day care.
So I worked part time at a well known store in the housekeeping department when I found out I was pregnant with my youngest son.
After having my youngest,I was having issues at work with not getting paid what I should have been. I was also not getting any benefits (I was working full-time hours but getting part-time pay with no benefits). So struggling with that and missing my boys like crazy my hubby and I decided to come home.
That was in 2002. I haven't regretted it at all. I am now homeschooling my boys too. We've had our ups and downs but I can't imagine being any where else right now.43729
When my husband and I got married, I moved to the city he was working in. He had a full-time job/career and I was working part-time at a bookstore. I was still in the process of getting a job when I found out that I was pregnant. We decided that it would be best if I stayed home with my daughter because we knew I probably wouldn't find anything that would cover the cost of childcare and still have money left over.43730
