Kids aren't lacking in self confidence these days, rather I find they suffer from an over-abundance of self confidence. We need a reality check.

When my son was 6 we enrolled him in Tae Kwon Do at the suggestion of his teacher. It worked wonders! He became a whole different kid.

I'm really making an effort when my kids do something great, to say to them, "You should be really proud of yourself for how hard you worked at that." rather than saying, "I'm so proud of you." I think it's important my kids are achieving things because they want to do it, not because I want them to do it.

Give 'em lots of encouragement and show an interest in their schoolwork and hobbies. Also, let them know that it's OK to make mistakes--learning how to handle disappointments and overcome them are invaluable lessons for anyone!

I'm struggling with this with my daughter right now-- more than praise and love, I'm finding that she responds to challenges which she succeeds at even if it's on the weekend, doing something extracurricular.

Give them a task they can accomplish by themselves that lets them taste success.
