My son is 13 and was born Down Syndrome, more on the profound side of it, he is also autistic (on the lower end of that scale), he does not speak well, knows some sign language, he also is OCD, ODD, and I've been told years ago from a speech therapist that she suspected he is ADHD as well. I am very blessed that he attends a very small country school where the entire student body consists of around 120 students. Before his first day of school, his special ed teacher read a story to the fellow students he would be having classes with. It was about a Downs child. I think by her doing this, it prepared the other students what to expect from him. As it turns out, ALL of the other students treat him with respect, toleration and above all, love. I highly respect his special ed teacher for doing this and all of the staff that work so well with him. He has attended many other schools in the past, mostly larger ones, and he never made as much progress in all areas as he has at the one he is presently attending. I think it is the teachers' responsibility to point out to the "normal children" that it was not his choice to be born this way and it could have just as easily happened to you. "There, but by the grace of God, go I." I have always liked the old saying, too, "He was born that way, whats your excuse?" My heart goes out to those children that suffer from bullying. My prayers are with you all .

Yes. We removed her from the situation/school. After speaking with people who had faced similar circumstances we came to realize that trying to mediate with the bullies would only make things worse for our daughter. Prvt. School only cared abt $$$!
