My child has been at STM now for 3 years and loves it, she wishes she could go on the weekends! The Msgr. is extremely passionate about teaching to the child's individual ability and many teachers are willing to tutor. While other schools are cutting back on expenses, STM is growing and expanding. A positive experience. Strong faith values and academics, great balance.
Top-notch academics in an amosphere that fosters faith and values.
Good strong academics. Great teachers. Principal likes it his way or the highway but can be good at resolving issues. Bullying is high & there are little or no consequences for the bully. Very clichey rich kids who do whatever they please. Don't follow Christian values at all. Difficulty learning if you don't fit in. Don't dare to be different or you will not make it. 3rd & 4th grade teachers are wonderful. Office people are not truthful & very gossipy. Monsignor turns a blind eye to most problems unless you donate a substantial amount of money to the church.
While there a strong sense of community and the school breeds high achievers, those who have different learning styles that fall outside the norm are left behind because of the 'lack of resources.' The curriculum breadth and depth is lacking and very traditional, which works for some, but not all. When we were considering schools for our son, we were told that STM educates the child and not the grade. We have not found that to be true. My son has a diagnosis of ADHD and all we have heard is that 'we don't have the resources' to give him the individualized instruction that would be helpful to him. Also, there is limited communication with parents and the administration seems to be disengaged from the families of students who don't fit the cookie cutter that STM uses. We will be sending our son to public school next year.
Academically, this school is great. The situation with larger numbers in the 1st grade classrooms wasn't the best idea ever, but we'll all survive. The major problem with this school is, as someone else says, the bullying 'policy'. As far as I can tell, there is no policy other than to turn the other cheek to 'favorites'. This doesn't seem very Christian to me...I think the administration puts on a really good front, but when it comes down to what really matters for every child, they just don't deliver.
first year our son has been at STM. It's a great school academically, socially, and safety.
I graduated from this school 2 years ago and my little sister has attended it for 3 years, as well as my younger cousin for 6 years. I have to say I don't think this school is very good at holding its high moral standards. There is a lot of bullying t this school and not very much discipline. the administration is very gossipy as well as its parents and i would not recommend this school to anyone who isn't 'perfect' or would like to be treated with dignity or respect.
I attended STM from grades K-8. Advantages: students are pushed to succeed more so than at a typical public school, there is a strong sense of community, and it is difficult to 'fall between the cracks' in terms of academics or discipline because STM is a strict place. Disadvantages: There's a lack of curriculum breadth and depth in comparison to a larger school. Also, if you aren't one of the students who can succeed in an environment of overachievers (e.g., you are an average student), you might feel a lack of confidence after a while because there are lots of strong students at STM who are constantly praised (average kids are not always given positive reinforcement). The school's extremely conservative rules and culture might cause students to act out or possibly dissuade students developing a sense of individualism. STM students do very well in life- most go on to (good) colleges.
St. Thomas More is a great school! The teachers are all great! I am a 7th grade student at St. Thomas and just love it!Everbody has friends and nobody is disincluded. The teachers are all great! They always help you when you are stuck on something or need help understanding something. The parent encolvement is good to! They are invited to most of the field trips and some of the actitives we do in the school. They are also always aware of how your child is doing in school because we have parent/ teacher conferences. As for the sports, I think we offer many different varieties. We have many academic programs too! For example we have Math Counts. Math Counts is a program we offer for the 7th and 8th graders, they meet after school and work on their math skills. St. Thomas More is a great school!
I attended Saint Thomas More from Fourth Grade until I graduated in Eighth. After stumbling upon this site today, I figured I could say a few words about my experiences there. I truly loved St. Thomas. The teachers were truly passionate about the subjects they taught and it was obvious that they genuinely cared about their students. Lessons were creative and presented in ways that stuck with us. If something was unclear, teachers were willing to spend extra time with a student so they had a firm understanding. Lunches were delicious, art classes were exciting and vibrant and gym class promoted a sense of good sportsman ship and wellness. But beyond these things, being a St. Thomas More student, made me feel like a part of a special family. There was a sense of belonging and familiar traditions leave me with fond memories. Saint Thomas More is an excellent school.
