Your experience will depend on the teacher that your child has. All the teachers/staff are all union, so the school is stuck with the good, the bad and the ugly. From a special needs standpoint, you have to look over their shoulders - all the time and independently verify what you are told. And some teachers just don't bother to comply with IEPs - and the special ed teachers acknowledge that certain teachers are problems with IEPs - so you have a known teacher problem, but no solution for it. They're also not big on parent involvement. If you are a parent for a holiday party, the office staff acts like a watchdog to ensure that you don't go back to the classroom more than 5 minutes ahead of time (as measured by the official office clock) - wouldn't want me back in the classroom 6 minutes ahead of time. Thanks for making me feel welcome. The superintendent sends out an e-mail asking if parents really want parent/teacher conferences or if they should be eliminated - really??? The superintendent is thinking of axing parent-teacher conferences at the grade school level? Safety is sometimes an issue that they don't address - esp. car pool pick up & bus riding behavior.
We have had children in this school since 1998. The school has consistently proven to be an exceptional environment for learning. They have wonderful teachers and the new principal is very personable and engaged with students, faculty and parents. There is a very active PTO and many opportunities for parents to be involved with the school. We love the setting, the facilities, the curriculum and the school as a whole. There are many excellent "extras" in other schools that are available to students as part of the curriculum here, including band, chorus and orchestra. The art and music teachers are fantastic. PE is fun for the kids. Special needs are addressed by a combination of aides with inclusion as well as with pull-outs.
