My son never liked school, EVER. Every day in elementary school seemed like a challenge, and homework was AWFUL for us. Since he started here, he has thrived. The teachers are all wonderful with providing feedback, and he seems interested in what he is learning. His mid quarter grades are the best he's ever had. I am so glad that he is here.
I recommend that you do not have your child go to this school. My daughter is disabled with epilepsy and they treated her poorly. The students there bully and it seems as if the staff doesn't care. Some of the teachers are very disrespecful, and one of them even said she is tired of my child because she misses school and completely embarrassed her. I had her doctor give the school a note to excuse all of her absences but they were still stressing her out about it before telling me. The staff was very inconsiderate of how my child felt. The school is terrible.
East Hills Middle School is the BEST school EVER! I am in High school now and i still want to go back to east hills. I was in the Harmonium program in 8th grade and it was the best year of my life. I love the teachers and the curriculum. I learned so much in my years there. Harmonium (a music program at East Hills) also taught me so much about music and i had a great time learning and performing! I LOVE East Hills!
There is a lot of bullying tolerated at this schhool. Teachers simply turm the other way.
Great selection of classes.. but VERY POOR communication from some teachers.. My son has special needs, and I was not informed that he was failing a class (for the year.. grades were B B C F with his final grade an F for the year ) until I received his report card in the mail this summer.
I went to this school in 6th Grade. This is the best school i ever went to I recomend this school to any parent that wants to put there child in it. They have an outstanding staff and amazing students.
I have two daughters. Both began in Catholic school. The eldest, a current sophomore, is still in Catholic School, the current 8th grader transfered last year. The transfer child went from 35 in her class to over 350 and it has been positive in many ways. The class room size remained the roughly same. The programs such as Monagacy, Nature Quest, Spirit of Bethlehem and Harmonium afford the students an opportunity to apply what they are taught and help them reach beyond the class room setting. For such a large school with so many students, I am impressed with the communications for both positive events and negative occurrences. Having a child in the smaller Catholic School as comparison, I can say without doubt that academically East Hills has served my child better and I am hopeful Freedom High School will be the same.
Great concept but poor execution is how I would describe this school. Students are not grouped by same academic level, leaving some unchallenged. Nature Quest, an environmental education program offered to 7th Grade, has proven itself to be a great asset to my child but not without compromise of accelerated curriculum if one exists in this school. Though I heard 8th Grade teaching is generally fair, one of the Language Arts teachers has been giving undue challenge since day one, succeeding in making my child hate school.
We have here an absolutely poorly run school. Lackadaisical implementation of the Code of Conduct means that discipline and behavior among students is at a level I consider shameful. Teachers are generally downtrodden and defeated, many have been beaten into putting in the bare minimum. A 6 out of 10 is generous and reflects that there are quite a few quality students here. Unfortunately they deserve much better than EHMS offers, which is a sorry thing to admit.
Unfortunately, I don't have anything positive to say about this school. For such a large school, East Hills severely lacks organization and I have not seen any improvement for two years now. My daughter completed 6th Grade with a feeling that she hardly learned anything. As far as the extracurricular activities are concerned, school failed to provide the information to 6th Grade on time for my daughter to participate.
EH is a great school. The teachers are amazing, and the thematic programs they offer are better than any I've ever seen! There are larger class sizes, but that's also because we are the biggest middle school. I had 34 kids in my class this year, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. Everyone in our class was friends, and it really showed in group projects. I was involved with many extracurricular activities, including band, choir, and the play. EH provides a vast variety of everything. All the teachers I have had are superb, and the gifted program really challenged me. I do not like our math books because they don't explain and you can't use them to study, but the math teachers are so great that it makes up for that.
We moved to Bethlehem from a smaller school district in NJ when my son was starting 6th grade. He's now completing 8th grade at East Hills. The concept of team teaching is very attractive and I am impressed with the Seminar program (for gifted students) that he attends. I am not happy with the large class size >27. The large class size is not ideal for the student who needs a smaller environment to thrive. He was also offered an array of electives for the end of the day (drama, sports) don't remember them all. The organized sports program is good: varsity soccer good. East Hills feeds into Freedom HS.
