I taught there for 31 years and it was a great place to work.Teachers showed great interest in the students
I disagree with the parent's comment that the school is 'getting better all the time' Really?? Check the test scores, here at Great Schools, and you will see that the entire school district is below state averages almost entirely! If this is 'getting better all the time', then our district is failing our children!
This school is starting to look better all the time. There are the typical middle school problems that you will find anywhere. Their academics are starting to improve. The fifth grade move to Middle School has most of the 'bugs' worked out now.
Clearfield Middle School is a very poor exhibit of an educational facility. First of all, the teachers, counselors, and leaders are very discouraging to the children. My child is academically advanced and received nothing but discouragement from all. Both parental ratings are correct. This school is more like a boot camp environment than a teaching environment. As far as PSSA tests go...what preparation? We moved and you would not believe the difference in the school. They prepare for the PSSA tests weeks in advance here. I'm so glad I got my children out of this district.
My child went to this school for several years. At the time she began, she had a huge deficit in reading and math. She was in learning support but the regular teachers did not accomodaite her in Science and Math. She completed 7th grade and passed only able to read on a 4th grade reading level. Her learning support teacher was wonderful as was gym and consumer science but the rest of the teachers she had spent more time sending her to the principle for things like not having a pencil or paper than allowing a struggling student the opportunity to attend class. There is an online website that you can check your students progress but it is often not updated or accurate. Most of the year it showed she had not completed assignments but when I would call the teachers, they said it is not updated. Bad school.
Clearfield Middle School is a 5-8 grade school with limited funding for programs. The school as other parent says focuses more on disicpline and less on acedemics. It seems as though the principal does not know or want to work with parents or students unless for discipline. Math and reading is not very good. Outside activities are lacking, very poor parent teacher encouragement, not too much diversity, their is a fulltime police officer in the school. Not sure if violence seems to be an issue or not or what the purpose of the police officer is. School is in economically poor area. Very small close community.
Clearfield Middle School is not a good school for our youth to learn and grow. More focus is on discipline than education or developmental assets. Not much diversity, limited programs for youth are availble Some very great teachers are employed their but it takes much more than what they alone can do. Students need to feel valued and useful not school runs more like boot camp with all of the rules than as an institute of challanging the minds of children. Even office staff reflect this to parents when visiting the school. It is a lot to get to use too especially if your youth came from a more friendly caring elementary school. During PSSA testing most of the focus is on preparing the youth for this little instruction is given for other areas. In all the school really needs to work on developmental assets and more free-learning oppurtunities.
