I think in this economy, it's hard for this school to hire quality teachers and it's hurting the overall education of the students. During this past school year, we saw a real decline in the teaching quality. One of the teachers has students coming after school continually for extra help. Honestly, if she taught the subject well to begin with, students wouldn't need help after school. Some teachers left during the school year, and inferior ones were hired. I only see a real decline in this school.
My son is in his second year at Devon and loving it. It is small and nurturing, with a very friendly environment. Discipline is firm but fair, and teachers appreciate the humor and energy of teenage boys. Academics are challenging, but so far without the crushing pressure that so many kids are under these days. Kids who struggle seem to be met with understanding and help. There are lots of AP choices, starting in 10th grade. Sports are very accessible, thanks to Devon's size. Some, like soccer, usually have no cuts. If your kid is a real jock, this may not be the school for him. Athletics are not a huge focus. Parents can become involved in the many events throughout the year. I have mets lots of great, friendly people this way. I highly recommend Devon to those looking for a small, close-knit, academically challenging environment for their son.
Devon Prep offers a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum within a private Catholic school setting. The school boasts, as one index of quality, a very high proportion of AP Scholars; by the time I graduated, I had accumulated enough credits to skip freshman year of college, having taken 7 AP courses. Devon also boasts a reasonably broad range of extracurricular activities and several successful sports programs. Parents are quite involved. Although a 'prep' school, Devon has always maintained a lower-key attitude than most of the other private schools on Philadelphia's Mainline. I found this very attractive about the school. Having said this, I think students (even many of the top ones) tend to stick to more local and regional universities, even though the top 20% can easily gain admission to the nation's most prestigious universities.
The Quality of academic programs is the highest in Metropolitain Philadelohia for secondary eduction. The average Sat Scores for the school is in excess of 1265 for the 2004 Graduates. Devon boasts of 100% of its Student body proceeding to secondary education. Bothof my sons graduated with more than 30 credits towards their College education, and both received partial scholarships to the Schools of their choice. Devon's education really prepared our boys for the college experience while they enjoyed their High School Days. Devon's Sports program supports the student and does not overshadow the Education. In 2004-5 Devon Prep were League and District champions in Cross Country Country, Soccer and Second in BsketBall. For more information contact the School at DvonPrep.com
