Amount of homework: Too much
August 16, 2015
Homework is either very heavy or non-existent. Students have few opportunities to learn the discipline of homework. The homework given would often be better used as classwork, with teachers available to assist. There are no materials sent home nor any use of online tools for parents to reference to help students with homework or for students to review. Homework no one can do isn't helpful. The act of completing work in the time away from school is what homework should be about, not introducing new concepts (which parents don't have the ability to teach or assist with). Homework is also scheduled around PSSAs. No homework is given around PSSA time, ostensibly so students can prepare for testing.

Develops grit: Neutral

If it does, it's because the students are trained for standardized testing from elementary school on, which picks up in PCMS due to the principal's focus on PSSAs. Students who work hard in academics aren't necessarily rewarded for doing so.

Develops respect: Disagree
August 16, 2015
Most current students or alumni have little, if any, respect for PCMS. Once students go out into the world, they get perspective on what other schools are and what they could have achieved. Respect tends to drop with the amount of real world experiences its alumni have.

Develops empathy: Neutral

The students do this because of who they are, not because the school offers any guidance or incentive,

Develops honesty: Disagree
August 16, 2015
Students and teachers are treated differently by who they are, who they know, what activities they do, and how little they rock the boat.

Few extra curricular activities that aren't a sport. One field trip per school year per grade. No outside speakers or non-sport assemblies with the exception of school day band concerts. Principal focuses on minuta like pencil dispensers and directing traffic during parent events rather than student safety or academic quality. HEAVY push on standardized testing, sacrificing in-class teaching & experiences. Entire school year revolves around PSSAs, which is why the school is highly-ranked (based only on PSSAs). Building houses and mixes elementary school age and middle school age students. Teachers are fine but encumbered by teaching the PSSA, which benefits the school district, rather than course material that benefits students. Parking lot in extreme disrepair, which is also where P.E. is held in better weather. Students running through parking lot is a safety issue, which principal goes outside to witness (and to socialize).

This school has the worst principal I have ever had involvement with. I would avoid enrolling a child in this school at all costs!

Profile Completeness

BASIC

Want to improve this school's profile?

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
