The school has a new security system in place to ensure the safety of its students. This is an old posting and needs to be updated!
Greencastle Primary has some wonderful teachers that care, and so do the learning disability teachers. However, a few rotten apples spoil the bunch. For a small town, Greencastle has an excellent educational system. There is also excellent parental involvement in GAPS.
GAPS has been an incredible school for our children. We have 2 children there now and they both love it. The teachers have all gone the extra mile to meet my children where they are at and challenge them beyond what is being taught in class. The kids have many opportunities to do outside activities as well at the environmental center on campus. I love that all 4 of the schools k-12 are in a horseshoe shape where you can easily access all at once. The kids have loved every aspect of GAPS. The PTO has been very helpful as well. We love the principal as she is very personable and seems to know each child by name. It's very impressive. Most kids ride the bus (even a block away) and we have been pleasantly surprised with the care shown on the buses. I love it here!
Greencastle Primary, for the most part, is a wonderful school. Most of the teachers, with a few exceptions, care about the students, and their well being. The principal needs to be more understanding toward the parents however, and more accessable. They do have a great K-2 program, but with an over 20 to 1 ratio of children to teacher, that needs to change. There is a good special needs program for kids with special needs. Parents regulary volunteer (if the teacher allows it). Overall, I'd only give it 3 out of 5 stars. Hire more teachers to lower the ratio, and have the principal change her attitude, then conditions would improve. I would also like to see more security on site, to prevent possible tragedies from occuring.
I think this school is very standard but definitely has the need for further programs, including after school programs and sports for their students. It is a small town community and therefore you do not find the opportunity for diversity like this in comparison to larger schools.
