PTA is wonderful- does a lot of great things for the students
We came from another school district. This is a 100 % upgrade from that school. The teachers seem to be caring. Mrs. Moody is a great secretary, and welcomes anybody in the front door with open arms, and a smile. The only gripe I have is with the football program. 2 years now we were shunned out of it. First year we moved up here, and found out about it too late. August ?? (Season didn't even start yet!) They told us to wait for papers to be sent home, next year. Last day of school, 'still no papers'. So when I called, 'It's too late, again!' They decided not to send papers home this year. 'I forgot to take that mind reading course when I was in school.' But they do have other activities that are good for the kids. Soccer, baseball, fall ball, etc.
Although Rice Elementary has the potential to be a great school, the concentration in education has been primarily on testing & scores. A 'grill em & drill em' attitude has been adopted. The lack of teachers originality and willingness to participate in any activity other than 'teaching' has brought morale to a low point. Parents who wish to become more involved in the daily activities at this school are discouraged by both the actions of the staff and the lack of opportunity. Crestwood district would do well to remember 'what looks good on paper is not always what the reality is.' When a change is suggested it is met with a very negative reaction. Adopting a 'how can we make this work for us' problem solving attitude would serve this area well. Change is here-make it a positive one! Look to other outstanding schools to model after.
This school and district fair very well in testing. There are many caring and qualified teachers, yet quite a few that should move on... In the past originality in curriculum has been lacking. Many issues between parents and teachers due to a strike have damaged the relations between the two. New powers in the board, admin, and school give a hopeful outlook for the future. In general there could be more participation from parents and teachers. Very active PTA, if not small for the size of student population.
Great community involvement. Wonderful programs. Love the school district.
