We moved to this school district in the middle of the 2007 school year. Both my boys were in middle school at that time. It could have been a tough transition, but the principal, teachers and students were all welcoming. It's a safe school with involved teachers and parents. It's truly an All American school!

As a graduate of this school and a parent of two students there, I can only express how sad it is to see a school community and culture die slowly. Many of the top teachers are leaving or looking to get out due to internal problems. While the building is being beautified, paper and other resources are being cut back as well as classes being cut or overloaded. I rate this as average since the teachers still care and do the best they can with limited supplies and resources. The heart of the school is being cut out so the money can be spent on the shell and facade! It really hurts to see this happen. If my children were just starting at the high school, I would move.

Outstanding school with a strong emphasis on academics. I have children in 3 of the district's schools right now and any problems I had have been delt with quickly and with the students' best interests at heart. Exceptional teachers - mostly good principals, amazing superintendent. Both elementary schools have been beautifully remodeled. Excellent choice!

Northwestern is great for main stream students. It is a small district which allows more attention to each indivisual student. Northwestern is not a good school if you have have a child with special needs or disabilities. They do not have resources available to them to allow them to work with developmentally delayed children. If you have a special needs child...this is not the school for you. We have been very dissapointed and discouraged.

I was happy to hear of the appointment of Mrs. Meixsell to the position of superintendent. I am confident positive changes will come about. I hope other changes at other levels are made as well.

My third child is graduating this year and I am glad. They do have a caring administration and teacher staff but the emphasis has swung from educating children to coddling athletes.

I think Northwestern is a decent school, but seems to lack a strong emphasis on getting into top-grade colleges. With a little extra push to improve the math and sciences courses, I think this school could be more of a contender for those colleges. Also, there seems to be a major emphasis on sports as opposed to art & music, and therefore the parent involvement seems to be mostly concerned with the sports program...mainly football.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Pennsylvania used the Pennsylvania System of State Assessments (PSSA) to test students in grades 3 through 8 and 11 in math and reading, in grades 5, 8 and 11 in writing, and in grades 4, 8 and 11 in science. The results for reading, writing, science and math are displayed on GreatSchools profiles. The PSSA is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Pennsylvania. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the test.
