I love this school and the whole district! I don't think this school district gets the credit that it deserves! Great schools, great teachers, great district!!!
This will be my children's 2nd year at Nottingham and I can't say enough good things about this school! The teachers have been great and my children have excelled here! The best thing about this school is that my kids look forward to going every day and they are happy...to me that is so important! We are thilled with this school and would not want our children to go anywhere else.
I have sent two children through this school and am very pleased with the teachers, the curriculum and the progress that my children have made at Nottingham. I am an involved parent, I volunteer at the school, and I help my children with their homework every night. Teaching our kids is the responsibility of the teachers and the parents. If your child made it to fourth grade and doesn't know the basics of reading, as someone stated, then YOU have some responsibility in that. If you have a child with Asperger's or Autism, then YOU need to be an advocate for your child. Too many special needs children are dropped off at school, to be taken care of by someone else. They are disruptive at times and the school can only do so much to discipline. Parents need to be more involved with their children's education.
We moved here from Garnet Valley. After two years in Nottingham we pulled our children and they are now attending a private school until we hopefully get in on the lottery at Avon Grove Charter. They have a poor system for handling discipline. My children's classes were continually disrupted due to poor behavior from other children. Nothing innovative about the curriculum either. The district is renovating and rebuilding but the schools are just a shell. The inadequacies inside are still there and the children in this school and others in Oxford are being shortchanged. The parents who are content with the schools here must have nothing to compare it to. If they did, they would be appalled at the so called 'education' their children are receiving. For the taxes the citizens of Oxford are paying, they should be demanding more from their school system.
The children in this district deserve so much more than they are getting. Gifted and special education programs are unstructured and unorganized. Regular education students are put through an education assembly line. They are teaching for the tests and that's it. There's nothing innovative or special going on. It is average at best.
Moving here from Delaware in hopes of a better education and educational environment for our children, we were heart-broken to have out 1st of 3 children have such a hard time at this school. Although we had hoped for a nuturing environment we could benefit/contribute to for the next 16 or so years, we found a total lack of teacher support and/or involvement; zero desire for parental involvement; an administration who wants the best but has to settle for the whatever. Totally test (PSSA) focused. I've heard more excuses for shortcomings and inconsistencies than I ever could have imagined. If you live in Oxford School District you have choices for schools; review your choices carefully. We ended up pulling our child out mid-year and sending to a charter school. This was the smart thing to do. Good luck!
I have lived in Oxford for four years. The schools are behind in times. The schools focus more on non important issues then education. The drop out rate is higher. The teachers are not educated enough. There are no programes for Aspergers. 1 out of 150 children have Aspergers. This school does not care to provide the proper education for these children. These children are left behind! What happened to no child left behind act. I agree with the other parrent, do not send your child to this school!
This school district is the worst school you could ever send your child with any disabilities. There are no programes for children with Aspergers. The school deflects their responsibilities. The teachers are not trained the schools itself are not trained etc..this school distict is not prepared for the rising of autism and the spectum disabilities!!!! Do not send your kids to any oxford area schools.
We have recently moved from this area after living in Oxford for 10 years. The primary reason for our departure was the school district. It is lacking in almost every area. My son was at the top of the class in Nottingham and now in a capable district he is in remedial reading having never learned the basics of reading. All three of my children needed private tutoring in Math and Reading at our new school just to get them to grade level (in Nottingham they were at the top of the class). I would advise against anyone sending their children to this school.
A fine school. The administration has been capable but not parent friendly. The teachers overall however are quite excellent. It has been a very good educational experience for the three of our children who have gone through or are currently in the school. The math curriculum seems to be especially effective. This is not a perfect school by any means (are there any?), but I'm am pleased with what they have done for my children so far.
My experience with Nottingham has been quite different. We were thrilled with all three years at this school, especially the last two, since massive upgrades have been made with the curriculum. I've found the teachers and staff to be extremely caring and helpful. I'm thrilled to send another child off for 3 years here.
Very bad experience. They don't do anything when your child is threatend. Teachers are very impatient and make comments to the students that are rude. Anyone moving into or considering this school district, I would seriously reconsider. The amount of children in special ed is unbelievable. More than half of these children don't even need it, but they put them in there just to pass them through. You have 4th graders that don't even know how to fully read yet. The state really needs to look into this school. Teachers in the special ed classes are reading tests to them. The staff also rewards the special ed students with candy and pencils. While the children not in special ed get no recognition what so ever. Not even a good job from the teacher when they get a good test score. Teachers , staff, and the Principal in this school are impatient, mean, make excuses, are on a power trip.
They have great teachers who really care about the children. They make school a fun and exciting experience.
