One of the best schools in South Philadelphia. This school has made some major changes and tremendous progress and is one of the top schools in the entire district. They are competing with Masterman for the National Title 1 Distinguished School Awards for PA. The school offers a whole host of opportunities for children now - Golf, Ball Room Dancing, Intramural Sports, Book Clubs, Reading Olympics, Jr. Fire Fighter Program, and Gold Key Incentive Programs to name a few. They also offer support services for the ESOL students as well as after school support services. Parental involvement is starting to pick up and it really makes a difference. With the cooperative effort of the dedicated teachers and parents, this school is definitely a rising star.
Francis Scott Key school is definitely one of the best kept secrets in the Philly. It is easy to be number one when you enroll only the cream of the crop, yet this school does well despite the obstacles thanks to hard work and determination by the teachers, principal, volunteers and parents. The school offers support services to enhance learning and it also offers various clubs and activities. The gifted program is top notch and the MG students will be competing nationally in ExploraVision. They also offer Robotics and publish a School Newspaper. Golf, Ball Room Dancing, American Girl Book Club, Reading Olympics, Junior Fire Fighter Program, First In Math, Accelerated Reading, Instrumental Music, and intramural sports are just some of the clubs & activities offered. Some students will have the opportunity to participate in a school play and others will perform a choral ensemble at the Bourse Building. They are also a finalist for the National Title 1 Distinguished School Awards. No doubt about it, this is one terrific school!!
I wish I could say this is a great school - but unfortunately, it is not. I am not sure where the ratings for extracurricular activities come - they have NONE! Power Hr must be their after school activity!! There are no clubs, no groups, nothing. Parents don't get involved because the principal doesn't want them to get involved. He is a control monger! Teachers have been there for far too long & are 'too' comfortable teaching the same grade for years. Rotating staff to different grades or switching them to other schools would make a huge improvement for this school. Parents need to step up to the plate because many of them miss the mark. This isn't as bad as some schools in the district but it is not as good as it can be due to principal's unwillingness to strive for more. He is just waiting to retire. SAD!
The school is older and is NOT maintained. Class sizes are entirely too high. One teacher with 30-31 students is unacceptable. There is no support staff and parent volunteers are not wanted by the principal. The staff literally seems to be afraid of the principal which makes a person question his leadership qualities and capabilities. They don't make a move, think outside of the box, or go the extra mile for fear of retaliation by the principal. Very sad for the children that attend this school. Generally, it seems most teachers care but they lost that drive to make a difference. They don't bother to intervene because there is little follow through by the school and outside agencies. Sad for the children especially those whose parents miss the mark entirely. This school has potential but is in dire need of new leadership.
