This school has gone from horrible to awesome in just a year's time. Mr. Hall is our new principal and he is a breathe of fresh air. Very different from the male principal last year who used bullying to control his staff and students. Not to mention he flirted with everything in a skirt smh.

Houston is DEFINITELY going from good to GREAT! The new Home & School Association is really active and involved with the school, students and community. The new principal, Mr. Hall, hit the ground running upon appointment!

I'm a proud parent of a Houston 2nd grader. Although the school has gone through changes in these past couple years, they've all been for the better. Mr. Hall, the new Principal, is energetic, ambitious and results driven. He has high expectations for his teaching staff and firmly believes that EVERY student can learn. The parents are engaged, the community is involved and there is a general excitement about the school. Please attend one of our open house tours the second Monday of each month at 9:30 a.m.

We feel lucky to have this great school right in our neighborhood! Our oldest child is in her second year and we look forward to our younger child starting next year. The teaching staff are very experienced and caring - they look out for the children's emotional well being as well as academic. The parents and community are very engaged. The halls are bright, attractive and clean. The Music Program is a great asset to the school and includes instrumental instruction, a band and special school trips. The full-size gym is a critical component as well.

Houston is a school on the rise! We have excellent teachers and dedicated volunteers (both parents and area residents). The new principal is energetic and open to new ideas. We have an amazing music program that starts with vocals in K and includes many instrumental options for the upper grades. Foreign language is also available. The halls are clean and orderly. My oldest daughter is in 1st grade at Houston. She attended Kindergarten as well. Her classmates are very sweet with each other and when I've visited the classroom they are eager to raise their hand and participate. Morning drop-off is orderly and pleasant - I get to see all of the classes and teachers at one time - very good overall impression.

Houston has had a reputation as one of the remaining good public elementary schools in the Philadelphia Public School system. The school seems to be failing quickly. I have experienced inconsistency in the 3 years that I have been part of the Houston family. It is difficult to help students develop with constant personnel changes. My child had a whole school year without a consistent teacher. Substitute after substitute. Most mornings there was no teacher present to meet the children. Safety then became an issue. The staff didn't see this as a problem until I attempted to bring the children in. They told me that I couldn't, but failed to tell me what they were going to do. Receiving A's & B's from random teachers throughout the school year and then failing to meet the qualifications to test out into a charter school, indicates that children are being passed thru without proper evaluation. We never received a final report card from the previous year. Considering that the teachers changed so frequently, we didn't bother to pursue it given that it was likely inaccurate. We are entering year 4 and guess what? The 3rd principal. We need to do better.

I attended this school in the 80's and my child attended Houston as well. I must say that I still love this school. Ms. Newman is an awesome principal and she genuinely cares about her students. I love the front office staff as well as the teachers. Each year my child had an amazing teacher. I definitely would recommend this school to other. Don't be fooled by ratings from prior students or bitter parents. This school is truly a great school with teachers and staff that cares.

above average we have great things in our school like art music gym computers. But the only thing our school is missing is Spanish and other languages.

I have been at Houston for 3 administrations, each were valuable for what they accomplished. Everyone should send their children to Houston for the dedicated teachers and staff. Under the new Principal there is new energy, enthusiasm of students, and great staff morale. Houston has now risen to new heights.

Neighborhood school has deteriorated since current principal took over in '99. Reputation had been on the upswing until then.

I think the curriculum is great and the classes offered will make the kids well-rounded individuals. However, some of the staff need to be more personable and more understanding of the different needs that each child has. Some staff members also need to be more professional in their approach to the children and the parents and should not discuss a child's personal business to another child's parent!

My child is in the gifted program at Houston. I feel that this program has enchanced my childs vocabulary as well as expose him to different cultures. I would also like to commend my sons teacher for the fabulous job she did with my son along with her other students this 03-04 school year. Mrs. Warren is the best!

Profile Completeness

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
