Masterman is a great school in terms of education. It is full of some of the most intelligent and hardwoking students throughout the Philadelphia region. The students are hardworking and very freindly. Cliques do not exist at the school and everyone helps eachother. However, I believe the school may be starting to falter. The teachers there are either amazing educators or terrible, lost instructors. Personally, I think the school is only doing this well due to the students determination to learn.
My son spent 8 years at Masterman. As a retired high school math teacher, not at Masterman, I hold the school in the highest regard. I could not have been more pleased with the education my son received there.
I as a student who attends Masterman has an very extreme year! Masterman pushes you to the limit where it will help you in life. Masterman is a school wher orgnazation is the key. If your not putting effort into what you do then the teachers are not putting effort into your grade! You hqve to go above limt! I experinced that alot here, but safety wise, masterman is on top of its game. Hey, The Mayors Daughter goes there! * Their motto; Organaztion is the key to sucess here at masterman. Thats what my teacher always told me! Your child will always be entertained here with education! ~ effort~
This was my child first year at Masterman Middle School and I can say that it was an adjustment for the entire family. Your child will do well here if they are able to be organized and have parental support. The school teachers are great educators and know the subject well. However, the teachers and the administrators are not warm and fuzzy, as a parent you will have to adjust. My advice to parents is for you to be your child own best advocate and be proactive with their education. The children will adjust if they happen to fall behind just remember they are competing on a more competitive environment and they will do very well where ever they attend for high school. And finally, some of the parents are snobby and overly showcase themselves in their child education, pay them no mind.
I Think Masterman is a very good, and serious enviornment to learn in. I've attended this school since 5th grade and I love it! They have very good academic skills in this school. I am now about to move on to 7th grade, I am very much planning on attending this school for high school.
I have a daughter who currently attends Masterman and can I say she loves the school. This school pushes her to reach her fullest potential. She learns at a fast pace which is good for her, but if she needs any support, the teachers, deans, and her parents are there to support her. Masterman is the best school in Philadelphia and the teachers are great. If you do not have a child who can keep up with the busy work load and if you are are parent who is to busy to assist in your child's education and advancement, this may not be a school for your child
My daughter goes to Masterman, and her grades have skyrocketed. She is geting 99% in science, literacy, and social studies!
It should be noted that Masterman is both a middle school and a high school and most kids enter in 5th grade. For some kids being in a big high school-like setting with kids from all neighborhoods is a bit overwhelming, as I suspect is it has been for the child of the parent who posted on Feb 6. In my experience, such kids are the rare exception. Most of the academically advanced kids here thrive in this environment. I have had two very different children attend Masterman Middle school, and my younger child is now in 11th grade. My other son went to an older, more 'prestigious' academic magnet school, and I am convinced that my child at Masterman is getting the better education.
I give Masterman 5 stars for giving excellent support to challenging situations. The teachers are very willing and open to help by providing useful strategies to overcoming hurdles.
Great Atmosphere. Great Kids. Part of a poor school district that should invest in this talented school. Definitely prepares the children for College.
It's not a bad school. On the contrary, it's quite a good one, but like every other school, it has it's flaws. Masterman has a big problem with eliteism, and many of us do think we're better than others. Truthfully, we're not. Everyone tries, but there's the people who give the 80%, and then the people who give the 120% to balance everyone else out. And the cleaniness and supplies are definitely something to be desired.
I attended Masterman from 1997 to 2004. I have stayed involved in the alumni association and activities because I love this school and have very fond memories of my time there. It is an excellent school and I plan to groom my soon to be born son to attend this institution and be part of it's legacy.
Masterman did not live up to its expectations. I regret attending because of the homogeneous student population, a very corrupt teacher, ridiculous school policies, pointless assignments (mostly busy work), unclean facilities, lack of supplies, and horrible science programs/clubs/classes.
This is an excellent school. It properly melds both the academic and the athletic to provide its students with an outstanding experience. My wife and my daughter attended the school and both had extremely positive experiences. They are a public school that achieves like a private school.
This is the best public school available in the metropolitan Philadelphia area and probably the best performed public schoolin Pennsylvania in terms of the sate-wide annual PSSA tests. It did better than most expensive private schools around Philadelphia and in its suburbs. This school is probably the very reason I still dwell in Philadelphia in order for my kids to attend Masterman.
The best public Middle School in Philadelphia. A wide range of extra-curricular activities, especially academic activities. Teachers are mostly above average, some are superb. Several ignore the obligatory five-pound textbooks entirely. My only complaint is that the foreign language instruction is very weak. Either they should do it properly, or skip it entirely. The two principals have been highly visible, and have shown leadership.
Masterman is great for college-bounded students. If your kid is clear about what he/she wants to do, Masterman is great. Although some extracurricular organiztion are a bit small, it actually give individual students room to express themselves!
I am also a student at Masterman, in 11th grade. Masterman is a school for students that are exceeding the standards at their neighborhood schools greatly and need more of a challenge. While the resources aren't always the best (probably better than most Philadelphia Public High Schools, however), the teachers are mostly good to excellent and the student community is very tight-knit and for the most part accepting. The environment is one of learning and achieving, regardless of one's background. The major drawback is the pressure to succeed, which can create intense (though sometimes unspoken) competition between students. All in all, it's a great school and is perfect for those looking for a small, close community of students committed to living up to their full potentials.
