My child was diagnosed with an attention deficit disorder, and I found absolutely no help at Masterman. The teachers are uninvolved & unsympathetic, and the Principal and SEC are completely hands off. To truly support these gifted & bright kids, Masterman needs to learn to embrace diversity of intellect. Not all kids are robots, and being gifted doesn't mean you all learn the same way. The onus is on the kids to achieve regardless of disability, and it creates an environment of not so subtle derailment & despair. I had to fight tooth & nail for over TWO YEARS to get even a basic assessment done, and once a diagnosis was made (both by the school and privately) I still found little to no help. In addition, there is rampant bullying, threatening behavior, and little to no communication from teachers. Do yourself & your children a favor & don't believe the hype surrounding Masterman. Find a school that supports every kid, not just the robotic overachievers.
The school is full of kids who THINK they are the best and brightest but only about 1/2 of them really are. The environment is terrible with serious bullying that seems to be allowed. Most of the teachers are average, they just have relatively smart kids go teach so it is easy to have success
What was once a great school with a thriving environment under the leadership of principal Neff is now being driven into the ground by a much too inexperienced principal with poor leadership skills. I pulled both of my children this year.
Masterman is an incredible school only for the gifted. I am a current student in 7th grade and while there are some problems, it is overall an incredible school. The entire building could use a cleaning, and certain teachers should be fired, but other than that it is awesome. Everybody says that Masterman students are all nerds. However, while some students are nerds (Like Me!) many are not. The kids are very diverse and pretty close. There is always a bully, no matter where you go, and Masterman is no different. The workload is very heavy, especially in 7th grade and up, and they put waaaay too much weight on the 7th grade PSSA's, but overall I am very happy to be going to this great schoo and I really hope to get in for 9th grade!
I go to Masterman (8th Grade) and the teachers, for the most part, are great. Some teachers are not very good and slightly mean, but the majority of the teachers are very qualified in their field and are always there to help. Masterman is a great school with great teachers and awesome kids!
I'm a highschooler at Masterman. I saw that some people were saying Masterman pressures its students too much so that it can keep a high reputation. That's simply not true. All kids need some pressure to stay focused. Contrary to popular belief Masterman does not just teach kids how to take standardized test. It teaches its students the general knowledge they need to do well in college. If your lazy, your not going to like Masterman. End of story.
Masterman is a really good school. I like it , it's really diverse, the teachers actually want you to succeed, there are many sports and the building I pretty big and there are many opportunities for you to get tutoring if you need it.There are different clubs like the debate team, Odyssey of the Mind (Robotics) and many others. Another thing is there you won't have to worry about kids fighting in the halls or random class disruptions due to mouthy students. Masterman is a really good school but I have been told that it's not for everyone.
Masterman is an all together great school, but ITS FIFTH GRADE OR BUST. If you're not accepted to Masterman in grades 5 or 6 you most likely will not be accepted to the High School. Only 100 students are accepted into the high school each year and they most choose from the 200 8th graders here. Many advanced classes but unlike Central you cannot graduate with a Bachleor degree from Masterman. Middle school has a limited amount of clubs and most of the focus is on the high school but we're the best in PA for a reason! BTW PARENTS by sending your child here they will have completed Algebra 1 (1/3 of the eight graders complete Algebra 2, I was one of them) so that means they will have their Algebra 1 keystone out of the way and they will have also completed either Spanish 1 or French 1 (it's a lottery to see what language you have)
I think Masterman is a wonderful school. Especially for the location, it goes to show kids can expell from any location. It starts at home with our children. The staff is on target, ready to give are children the best education possible. Pleasant and friendly invirourment , I would recommend this school to all my family and friends . Masterman my hat's go out to you, keep up the good work!!!!! A proud parent from West Philly. You make are neighborhood proud......
