We have had two children go through Big Backyard, and honestly, I couldn't have been happier with the experience. The play based learning curriculum is extremely well organized, providing an ideal mixture of free play and structured learning. The director is a wonderfully loving woman who treats your children as though they were her own. She has done a terrific job of putting together an attentive, warm and friendly staff. The co-op element provides the opportunity to participate as a parent in this very special community.

My first son attended BBY for 3 years, and my second son for 2 (he was too young for the first year). They had a fantastic experience at BBY! The staff creates an environment for each child to become his/her own person, and they positively flourished. The teachers handle conflicts deftly, and teach the children to listen to each other, work out their issues, and move on as a team. Children learn through very creative projects and interactive play. For example, the chilren don't just read Dr. Seuss books, they create their own "thingamagig" in giant size, or build their own large beehives and gardens out of cardboard and recycled material. My kids couldn't wait to go to school, and this enthusiasm carries over to elementary school. If I could give 6 stars, I would!

My children both have special needs and we were looking for a school that would be welcoming, and supportive. I could not have found a better location. BBY was a wonderful setting for us and I really liked that everyone is part a larger community. The kids have lots of open play time, which can be a down side for a few of them, but in general the teachers and students have a wonderful relationship!

My son has been at the Big Backyard for 2 years now and we could not be happier. More importantly, he could not be happier. From the teachers to the hands on parents, the school has a feeling that we are all in it together. The children are learning to not only work together as groups but to think independently. We feel lucky to have found our way into this school and look forward to our younger son attending next year.

One incredibly dynamic academic leader, warm and nurturing teachers and staff and parents/guardians that are eager to be a part of the cooperative setting all meld together to build children with a foundation of loving learning and those around them through play. This very special place let's every kid be who they are, all day, every day. With a 'controlled freedom' to roam in and out of the classrooms and with children in all three pre-K groups, and into the really big backyard, kids encounter and engage in wonderfully playful journeys that teach them all topics from reading, science, math, space, animals. One night I went to the school to present a fundraiser to the board, and I arrived to a darkened floor; faces lit only by the lights of the solar system that was being built for display for the students the next day. They take every subject with a great mixture of passion and creativity that is nothing less than engaging for the kids. Being a parent in a cooperative school allows you o not only be a gigantic part of your kids learning experience, but to build relationships and and watch all the children develop and grow. This great pre-K would benefit from such an award. Thx.

We love this school. Our kids have been so happy here. The teachers are kind, creative, fun and really good at communicating with children. The cooperative aspect is great and makes for a really strong community. If you are looking for a nurturing, child-centered school this is the place for you.

Love this school! My son went there for 2 years and I can't say enough good things about it. It is a very caring, warm place. The teachers seem to truly enjoy and believe in the importance of their work. They are constantly challenging and stimulating the kids in new ways. It is a great place.

This cooperative preschool located in a safe, lovely area of Mt. Airy has been providing a nurturing learning environment for children for over fifty years. The warm, caring, fully certified teaching staff are lead by a creative, professional director. Fellow parents are welcoming and involved. While there are many extras like cooking, science, art, and music, there is also much child-driven free play to let 'kids be kids.' The facilities include a huge fenced, outdoor play yard, as well as an auditorium for inside play during inclimate weather. The Big Backyard is an excellent option for families who have the interest and time to devote to a cooperative education experience. Applications are accepted year-round, although it is suggested that you apply a year in advance to ensure a spot.
