The school as I left certainly had its problems, but overall the teachers cared about the students. There weren't any major risks in this school, and the student body felt very secure in the environment. The problem I saw while I was there and even now is in the administration. Certain leaders seem to be using their positions on a power trip to make unnecessary changes. Many of these changes are making the educational and social environment of the school unproductive and almost depressing for the students.

I agree 100% with the April, 2006 posting. Lacking in ethics and morals - lots of bullying which - majority of poor, uncaring teachers. Substandard academics.

I am going to have to conflict with the person who posted a detrimental review on January of 2006. I did not have the privilege of graduating with my class when I was in school there, but I rebounded back and now confidently serve with the USN. I had phenomenal mentors who cared a lot about the students and who took their job seriously. There is nothing erroneous with desiring to incur more money, or more move up in the 'teacher rankings' that is why they joined an union.Somerset is an exemplary school, with A plus educators.

Academics not so bad, good teachers for honors subjects in general, excellent German language program

I find this school to be lacking in morals and ethics from a few teachers to administration. The district focuses on test scores instead of focusing on better ways to teach students and on hiring competent teachers. There is a big problem with bullying and overall poor behavior from students. But this seems to be permitted. Very disappointed.

Academic quality is mediocre, not outstanding, nor lacking. The school recently experienced a treacherous union dispute that has left the school short of instructors and a loss of many long time teaching faculty.

Somerset was a good place to prepare for college. I went from Somerset to a small liberal arts college in Maryland and I would say that most of my freshman level courses were equal to my senior level classes at Somerset. But like every school, you get out what you put it. if you don't seek out the challenges at the school, they won't present themselves to you.

Somerset, pa is a great place to live... It is 'america's county'. However the teachers and the education given by them is poor to marginal. My daughter recently graduated from somerset, and thank god, she was a self motivated learner. She excelled academically and received many fine scholarships, and is attending an excellent college. However, this is a credit to herself, and family encouragement. The teachers taught poorly and lack any motivation. She could have taught many of her upper level classes. I actually pity the parents and kids who don't take their educations into their own hands. There are a few good teachers. But only a precious few!! the others are only concerned with continuing up the high paying job ladder, and having a cushy guarenteed job, thanks to their union. It is a royal shame. The good teachers know who they are, the bad ones should hit the turnpike!

I graduated from SHS in 2000 and feel my experience was EXCELLENT at the time. i am very happy that i am not still attending Somerset though because of the continued striking by the teachers. i have always cherished my memories at Somerset, but i feel the school is going downhill because the teachers feel they need MORE and MORE.

I did my student-teaching at Somerset and it had wonderful dedicated teachers. It's too bad the school board is misguided year after year. It sure detracts from a wonderful district.
