I am a graduate of Washington High School. Since graduation I lived in 2 countries and 4 states. I came back just to send to my son to Washington. My son started in kindergarten at Washington Park and is now in 2nd grade. He has had excellent teachers! I think one of my favorite things is the fluidity levels for math and reading. They don't expect all kids to excel at the same level so there may be 5 different reading classes for a grade level instead of trying to make all 2nd graders read at the same level. This way, not holding any one back or leaving any one behind. The principals and teachers have always addressed any concerns I have had and made my son feel like he is important. Parents are encouraged to help out at the school activities. I think the one major area we are lacking in is parental involvement. We have a reading rodeo and math olympics every year. I've also been told that kids that have started at Washington and transferred to other schools are academically further along than the classes at their new schools. I am extremely happy with the school. Prexie pride is alive and well in Washington School District!
I'm a single working parent. The only reson my daughter is not in more is because of the distance I commute to work and the hours of activities for her age group. But i'm blessed and appreciative for all the support we get. I think WEEP is as good as any other great school. The MAIN difference between Trinity and WEEP is they have more 2 parent households and soccer moms. However, I do believe the lunches could be better, because the pricing teir program is horribly unfair. I pay the max and I'm middle low income. I'm very impressed with the implementation and executions of recent programs in the past 7, 3, and 2 years.
I come from a big family with lots of children. I've noticed a big difference in the demeanor and conversation content in the children attending this school. They appear to be very wise and doing very good in school.
I'm responding to the comment by the Parent Liaison. I just wanted to inform you that Wash Arts has a very nice program for families who cannot otherwise afford for their children to participate in extra curricular activities. If a child is on free or reduced lunch, they can qualify for a discount/reduction for many of the programs offered. In terms of parent involvement, what I think is sad is the fact that I can only go to m child's school and actually get past the front door when there's a school sponsored event. It used to be that a parent could go to the classroom and quietly peek in on their child. I've managed to get past the front door a few times, but as I walked through the hallways, all I heard was teachers screaming and yelling at children; That's what's sad. Innocent spirits being broken.
Our son is in 3rd grade and our experience has been very positive. Our child has had exceptional teachers who have met and exceeded our expectations. At this age there are not many music, art or extracurricular activities sponsored by the district but the community adequately provides many theater, dancing, art and sports related activities for children. These however are not affordable to every family in our district and it's sad to see that many children are left out because of this. I do not blame the district for this as I know there is only so much that can be done due to finances. As the Title I Parent Liaison for this district, I have seen an increase in parent involvement this year. It is a work in process. Parent involvement is strongly encouraged by the administration and teaching staff.
Having 2 children in the same grade, it is interesting to see how they compare academically in different classroom settings. I have found that for the most part, most of the teachers do try to make learning exciting for the children. These are the teachers that interact more often witn the parents. I try to e-mail all of my kids teachers and ask they to e-mail me back with any concerns, academic or behavioral, so that we can nip the problem in the bud. However, the ones that do this whenever the need arises seem to have the 'just trying to get thru the day' type of mentality. Kids need to feel accepted and encouraged to not only communicate their ideas, but also explore new avenues of learning without boundries. I hope that my children continue to get the great teachers that they have had this coming year.
