Two of my children have gone through Goshen Friends and have excelled there. The teachers were great in reaching out to provide extra help for my younger child, who was diagnosed with a learning disorder. Could not have been more satisfied with how they helped him grow as a student. Largely due to the help of the teachers, he was able to obtain a scholarship to a great private school in the area for when he entered sixth grade. The administration is the strongest part of the school. The headmaster is experienced and is striving to help the school grow. Both of my children loved being able to participate in the various clubs and extracurricular programs offered by the school. The headmaster is great at being involved with all of the kids. He is always visiting classes, and takes the students out to lunch a couple of time a year. The headmaster entered the school when my daughter was almost graduated, but since then he has been instrumental in hiring better faculty and sticking with their philosophy.
Lunch bunch program is great for working parents of preschoolers. It's great childcare without the pressures of traditional 6am-6pm daycare. Most of the teachers are great, but won't be there long with the current administration. I can see why there are all 1's or 5's. Your child either fits the mold or doesn't. We didn't.
We have two children at GFS, one of whom has some attention and focus challenges. We have been blown away with the difference the school's wonderful teachers and caring environment have made. Our child gets extra attention in her areas of need without being singled out as different. We credit Goshen Friends for helping to build her confidence in ways we had not been able to do on our own. We also really appreciate the values of diversity and respect that seem to be a part of the every day curriculum. Always a strong turnout at the school events too, which is a good indicator of how engaged most of us are.
When choosing a school for my child, I have always considered what his experience will be in a particular setting. Will he be happy, will he have friends, will he learn how to be a good person, will he be challenged academically, and, most importantly will he succeed in other settings? My family s experience has been that Goshen Friends School meets all of these expectations. The graduates are self-confident, inquisitive, and empathic young men and women who are prepared for life s challenges in middle school and beyond.
Extremely unsatisfied. My kids were there for many years until I started to realize they were not benefiting academically or socially. My children are so far behind. What a waste of money and time they can't get back. The administration is awful- bully head of school and administration that can't get their act together. Sadly. it is the kids and teachers that suffer. Teachers are caring and warm, what is left of them. I would never recommend this school to anyone looking for lower school. Preschool, yes, but only if your child is a round peg.
This school is not true to its stated philosophy. The administrators are snobbish and don't appear to have significant background in education. Moreover, my impression is that they are merely looking to make extra money by funnelling perfectly functioning 5 year olds into their "fives" program rather than letting them enter kindergarten like any other school.
The school has nice grounds, and at first their philosophy sounds great, but our experience was really bitter. I had my son there for two years and realized that they have poor communication, teachers poorly trained and a lot of prejudice They asked at least half of the kids in my son's class to be tested for behavior disorders (5 years old), what in my opinion is really bad, specially because they had a really inexperienced teacher. When we started looking for a new school, we came across other family that had had similar experience I wish we had realized that earlier and had never been there, we are now in another private school and really happy. In the new school we have experienced teachers who have high expectations from the students and my son has flourished. We wasted money, time and many sleepless nights and I would never recommend Goshen Friends to anyone I know.
My son has been there 3 years. What our family loves about Goshen: The setting.The large and idyllic outside play area.There is one specifically for the preschoolers and one where the older preschoolers and the elementary aged children play. The older children are encouraged to befriend younger children. It empowers the younger children to know that someone in another grade is their friend. It expands on "Come join us in a Circle of Friends, There is always room for one more". The events build community.From the picnics, to the auction, International Week, to the Clothesline Art Show, to the Fall Fest, Monthly service days, to name a few. Every child is included and every child feels a part of the action. All School Gathering and Meeting for Worship. It allows my child to center himself and it has taught him so many things including self restraint, respectful reflection, mindful self expression and active listening. The warm, tolerant and loving teachers! This is a perfect place for letting young minds truly become lifelong learners.
My daugter will be entering her thrid year at Goshen Friends. She started as a "turning three", now she will be going to their pre-k. This school has an excellent teacher/child ratio. My child has particular difficulty with transitions and she has always been provided with individualized care from a teacher or an assitant when she was having difficuly. It is a small school and every teacher knows every child. Their teachers tend to stay and there is a very small staff turnover. They have an excellent extended day program that runs from 8 AM to 5:30 for working parents. They also have a fun "lunch bunch" program which the children enjoy. They have a nice play ground area and make a priority of getting outside. They have an organized car line and this makes drop off and pick up easy. I love it!
This is a small school community with an excellent quality of academic programs. Special teachers include computers, art, music, and physical education. It is a Quaker school and includes a weekly school meeting.
