I am a parent of a daughter who is in 11th grade there, and they took (school board)?? away some of its after school activites or classes, cause they couldnt afford them due do the nature of building a "BRAND NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL" which is OVERBUDGET....
The whole school system is a total farce. You learn nothing . My child does most of her work on the computer and searching the internet to find things that the teachers should be teaching. I think all the flunkie teachers come to West Mifllin. All they seem to talk about is sports, and the band. Stay away from from this school if you want your child to succeed in college. They do nothing to prepare you for college.
I am a parent of one child who graduated in 2009 and another child who is a sophmore. First of all DO NOT join the Rotc, it is a joke, they do nothing and learn nothing, a complete waste of an elective. Also, the kids are out of control and nothing gets done to stop it, it's the same kids over and over. Most of the teachers have no dedication, I'm seriously thinking of moving or transferring my child to Christian school. Do not move to this area if your coming for the school. The elementary and middle school are fantastic, the high school is a joke.
I am currently a Junior at West Mifflin High School. I moved here from Thomas Jefferson last year and was not impressed with the teachers and the programs that they follow. Seems like the teachers are par for the course. I have found out that I learn more from researching things on the internet,as teachers just seem to 'skip' over the course and really don't apply their skills to the students. I will complete my schooling as .and will graduate form here, but I dont think they prepare you for any college at all ,all through the final years at the High School. Thye did a new direction or sure.
I am currently attending this West Mifflin Area High School. I have rated this school unsatisfactory. The academics in this school are terrible. There are two different categories of classes a student can take. The first is the advanced/honors courses. I am in 3 advanced classes and I am doing well in them. The curriculum is challenging enough to keep my interest. The second category is the college prep/or, in other terms, basic. The basic classes are a nightmare. The kids are out of control and completely distracting. The teachers end up taking time away from teaching the class to deal with these children. Despite the teachers' best efforts, unfortunately, they have no control over these kids. This may be a reason why our standardized test scores are so low. I hope something is done very soon to fix this.
I am a current student at West Mifflin High School and I will graduate in 2010. With the recent combination of West Mifflin and Duquesne, so many problems have been occuring and the faculty hasn't been seeing it. An additional 100+ kids came that we don't have the room for. Education does not come first in West Mifflin. It's Football, Basketball, Cheerleading, Band, and then education.
This school district is more concerned with sports...they say that education comes first, so why are they ranked very very low in the state. There is more emphasis on sports, cheerleading, and band....not enough on academics...
I think the School has all the amenities students need, it has a good basketball program, but all the other sports lack funds to be good programs. Of course the most important problem of this school, are the academics, they need improvement. It seems our kids are falling through the cracks. My children who attend here do not feel they get enough instruction during classes to understand the material they are suppose to be learning.
West Mifflin Area High School is a very nice school, with all of the amenities that students could need. From the swimming pool, fitness center, countless computer labs, recording studios, huge auditorium, multiple gymnasiums, the Large Group Instruction Room, greenhouse, extensive library, and nice atmosphere, this school is a physically a very nice place to be. However, the academics seem to be on a downfall in the entire district. Sports seem to be the number one priority here, although signs all around welcoming you to the district display its slogan, 'Where Education Comes First.' The required state standardized tests are not given much emphasis here, and the scores show that. I believe that there is much room for academic improvement in this district, and I hope it comes.
I think this school is very nice and doing well.
