As a parent of current students, I find the school to be great! The teachers are engaged and dedicated to the education of the students. The current superintendent and board of directors are dedicated to constantly evaluating and working toward the improvement of the academic curriculum. Extracurricular activities are diverse and, because the school is of moderate size, the opportunities for a student to participate in these activities is outstanding. There are never 80 kids vying for 18 spots on the team! There is truly something for every student who wants to be involved. The music program starts in elementary school and engages and inspires students early. Several bands, orchestras and choral opportunities to choose from, an outstanding program! Multiple art classes offered. Recent improvements to the building including air conditioning, new science and music/arts wing. Updated, spacious facilities. Most importantly this is a great community where people know each other. Family involvement is welcomed in the school community. Parents can get to know their kids teachers, coaches and mentors and communication is encouraged. Many parents are alumni!

It has such great school spirit and the teachers are wonderful. They are always only an e-mail away if a student needs help in any way. They have one of the best music programs around and the students really evolve into great role models for the middle school students.

Really good teachers and extra activities. Poor leadership as show by scores never making top 50 schools when all neighbors do. Survey the kids for the truth

Went to UM last year, the school itself is large and holds the amount of students well, but it's pretty disgusting, there's roaches all over and the smell from the sewage plant across the street is unbareable! the school needs some repairs, the teachers are ok though I must say I didnt learn much from some of them, but they do take a lot of steps to prepare you for standardized tests, overall though it's a pretty safe school, they have a good guidance department and will get involved in helping your child through teenage drama, the principal was awesome and even if I'd hate to admit it, the disiplinarian was cool too, they handle disapline well. But aside from those few minor downsides, I enjoyed my years in UM and think it's a good experience.

as a grad- i will tell you first hand the teacher only want to to show up, the ( the teacher ) do not care about teaching you or bringing you to the next level- just the next grade.

If your child is a self-motivated student who has a history of success, he or she will fair well at UM. However, if your child is an average to below average student, or a student with special educational needs, the overall expectations (teach + Admin) are low and resources are at a bare minimum. The high achieving student is placed on a pedestal but the average or struggling student is left to flounder, or is pushed through. In addition, the curriculum for the average student does not prepare him/her for college. The Curriculum needs an overhaul, expectations for students should be more consistent and special needs students should have more resources available. Final exams should be common and they are not--my child had a 5 question exam and a student in the same grade and class but different teacher had a 200 question final. (Some good teachers many older ones).

Good School. I feel the teachers a long with the principal know the children and go above and beyond to make them excel. Ton's of extracurricular activities and social activities. What I like most about this school is they always keep you informed of your child's progress.

Good principal. Knows the kids. Building is safe and clean. A few outstanding teachers. Weakest areas are math, foreign language, and guidance.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Pennsylvania used the Pennsylvania System of State Assessments (PSSA) to test students in grades 3 through 8 and 11 in math and reading, in grades 5, 8 and 11 in writing, and in grades 4, 8 and 11 in science. The results for reading, writing, science and math are displayed on GreatSchools profiles. The PSSA is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Pennsylvania. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the test.
