This is a decent school. It s good at preparing students for life. Football is VERY important in this school. Like the other student said there s A LOT of favoritism. There are a few good teachers, and like every other school teachers chose favorites and very few are inappropriate at times, but who doesn't let things slip occasionally. If you only care about the education part, it's great, as was said, especially in the math and science areas.98% of the teachers know what they are doing and can help the students if needed. They have more technology then some school I ve seen, which is a good thing. I personally (not just me actually there are teachers that agreed) when students need discipline, the way they handle it is not the best it could be. Sometimes I believed that the school is more worried about the way it looked then giving education and help to its students, but I'm still half and half on that. If you are not an involved parent and would not go in and talk to them about things to help your child, then it wouldn't be as good for your child. Even with all its flaws, I wouldn t have a huge problem with sending my son here. This is just my opinion though.
The last review was most likely made by a student who was wronged by a certain teacher and most likely didn't fit in. Yes, football is somewhat of a religion in the town but most of my class at Windber supported the football team and the football team was the first to support other sports such as soccer or basketball. The teachers at Windber are excellent mainly the math teachers as I'm sure my blog has numerous grammatical errors and misspellings. I'm proud to be from Windber and most that graduated with me I think feel the same.
Windber High School is very old and out-dated. As a student who attends, I feel that many of the teachers have favoratism on certain students as well. I also feel that many of the teachers are un-professional too. Don't bother playing sports here either (unless football) because if you don't play football, staff give the cold shoulder or little respect to other students. Bad lunches and uncontrolled students add to the list of the many cons in Windber High School.
The quality of the academic programs is based heavily on the great abilities of the teachers to encourage learning in their classrooms. Most extracurricular activities are available, and even some that I have not seen in other schools. Parents are stronlgy encouraged to keep up communication with their children's teachers, in order to take an active role in their education.
As a graduate and parent of children who attended Windber High, I would say that they do a good job of preparing students for life. I think the school is fully involved in the community and the community reciprocates. There is great school spirit. The students perform better than average on state tests. The principal is an effective leader. The school district's 'bang for the taxpayer buck' is second to none. Overall, a high quality school, in my opinion.
