such a wonderful school that is also academically gifted! According to data, most students who graduate from york suburban get accepted to a very desired college/university!
With Dr. Orban serving as the new superintendent, there have been several positive changes within the school district. Dr. Orban established the Superintendent's Lay Advisory Council; the group has been asked for their opinions about a variety of school district-related subjects/issues. Several committee members offerred suggestions about curriculum, future growth (large number of English Language Learners moving into the district), building and ground (selection of new plans for an elementary school on school district owned property in Yorkshire), diversity, and technology for the school district and in the classroom (American Cultures, 9th grade, computer used extensively in the classroom). Teachers are excellent! Demonstrated knowledge of their respective subject areas and extremely dedicated to teaching our students. The teachers are willing to work with the students in the mornings, before classes begin, during the teachers free time during the day, and after school until 4:00 p.m.
The academics at Suburban are outstanding, ranking among the best in the state and producing 8 National Merit Finalists in the class of 2006. The small school environment is welcoming and most children are happy here. There is a disturbing trend in the district, due to its proximity to Route 83. Maryland residents are purchasing homes in the district and commuting to work out of state. This is creating an ever larger pool of latchkey children, leaving children alone for far longer periods of time. Many of these parents are uninvolved out of necessity, but it's changing the chemistry of the school environment, and not for the better. There is a new principal as of fall 2006, so judgement is reserved on principal leadership.
It's just a wonderful place. Everyone care about each other and helps those in need. The academic quality of the programs is unparalled. Most students are readily accepted at the college of their choice.
This is my daughter's first year at York Suburban. Coming from a Maryland high school that was culturally diverse, it was an environment that encouraged her to become involved. My concern is that, although the other students are nice, they are not making new student feel welcome. This has prevented my daughter from having the desire to become involved. The education is wonderful, but I wish there was more of a peer to peer outreach for students of color. I would be more than happy to work with someone regarding this issue.
My daughter attended York Suburban High School for four years(9-12th grade). We feared her transition of schools at such a pivitol point in adolescence, would be hard for her. However, the students and staff were very accomodating. My daughter really enjoyed her years at York Suburban. She received a wonderful education that prepared her for college and benefited from being surrounded by peers that shared her same goals.
The quality of academic programs is at the upper level for the county but not without a highly significant level of politics and superficialities that create many issues for the youth. The Ceramics teacher is awesome for the kids. High level of parent involvement but stuffy and quite clickish. No warm genuine outreach unless at some impressive economic level. Not a very healthy caring environment for minorities. Being 'the same' is more highly regarded than being 'different'.
I also graduated in June of 04 with Lauren, but I have a slightly different take on YS. For serious singers, find another school! the chorus is not very good; i had to join the york syphony choir to sing good music with good singers. For instrumentests, the bad isn't that bad if you enjoy marching band. If you enjoy sciences, you're going to have to go to york college over the summer to actually learn the material. The science teachers currently at the school do not teach the material well enough. In fact they will admit that they do not teach toward standarized tests such as SAT II's. Rather they teach toward this PSSA test which is a joke. The states expectations for high schools are far to low to for schools of higher callaber. Suburban should be a good school.
I am a student at YS. I will graduate this June 2004 after completing my entire educational career thus far as a studnet in the YS School District. I love Suburban! Suburban is one of the few high schools in this area that can boast high test scores, lots of student envolvement in the district its self as well as sports and music. We may be a small school but almost everyone participates in one or more extracurricular activity.
