No, sometimes toy manufacturers promise more than they can deliver. But it doesn't take much to spark kids' imaginations.

I like knowing that a toy is feeding a particular learning phase like reading or gross motor skills. Although empty refrigerator boxes are pretty fun.

We're old school, so our toys teach outsiders just that. My daughter is 9 and still loves Play-Doh, Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, Legos, and her kitchen she got when she was 2.

I like toys that teach imagination, not where the batteries go.

Kids can learn from playing with a cardboard box so I'd venture to guess that there is a learning opportunity in most toys.
