I have a two year old whose birthday is in the latter part of October. I really want her to start preschool for the upcoming 2011-2012 school year. How can I go about making sure she starts-even if it is late-and stay ahead?

In some Schools they allow a Child to start at 2 1/2 if they are potty trained, Also they have a form you fill out to request that your child start early if they have a Birthday by Mid October. Go online to your child School Dist and do a search.

Yes, at 2 the main issue is potty training. But also socialization and ability to separate from you (aka "emotional maturity") helps. My best suggestion is to look around. Some schools will take children early or mid-year. Others won't

It may depend on what state you are in and what the cut-off date is for you. In New York, because she is going to be 3 in October, this would count as her "3 year old" school year because our cut off for entry into kindergarten is 5 years old by Dec 1st. If you have a Sept 1st cut off in your state then it might be more difficult. In New York it is expected that she might be starting preschool in a 3 year old class this year. You will have to check in your area what the expectations are. Ask other parents or you can get info at the local public school for recommendations for programs.
