My preschooler is due for Kindergarten next August. She has severe food allergies to eggs, milk, peanuts and tree nuts. I would like to keep her in the downtown area as I work there and am looking for a Kindergarten with sound food allergy policies (e.g. no nuts, nurse on site, no food in classroom, EPI Pen trained, no special treats etc). Any recommendations?
GreatSchools is a nationwide site, so downtown recommendations are going to differ in Los Angeles, versus NYC, versus Ft. Lauderdale. You might want to be more specific, and post in the city sections (to the right, browse by city, choose the metro area closest to you).
That said, private schools can institute more regulations that public schools. In my daughter's district, the school requests 'no nuts' but the district still offers lunch items that are dangerous (pad thai, peanut butter and jelly) and so it's difficult to get away from the fumes and the inherent dangers of contact. There are so many degrees of allergy (ingestion, contact, inhalation) that each degree requires a different approach when you can't get 100% compliance.
I know few public schools can afford full-time nurse on site, and no food/no treats will be a challenge too. Often teachers or office staff are EpiPen trained to augment the school nurse.
If you post more specifics for your areas (or post in the city areas) you might get some folks familiar with private schools in your area that can accommodate your daughter's needs. Too, you might want to contact an food allergy support group in your area for ideas.
