We are moving to Anchorage the end of January, and we need a daycare/preschool for our 4 year old (just turned 4 Dec. 15th). We'll be near Southport/Klatt area. Funds are very limited, and can't really afford the $700/month+ for daycare for another year and a half, since she won't be turning 5 until Dec. 2013. Do I understand that Anchorage School District allows for Preschoolers? If so, what age can they enroll? Is there limited enrollment? Is it free? Is it only certain days? What are the hours? I would research online or call, but we move in 1 MONTH, and the school is closed until Jan. 2nd so I can't reach a live person, and their website is down!! :( I really would like to secure daycare and/or a preschool as soon as possible since we are going to be up there and working in about 1 month. Help please!? Any advice? Thanks!
Hi Junogab, and welcome to the GreatSchools Parent Community.
I see the websites are down until this weekend. And they reopen on Jan 2, so official word would be a challenge for any of us to research.
It appears that Anchorage schools have pre-K, which still has an age cutoff of typically in the fall. So it's not likely your four year old would be eligible until the fall. These programs do prove to be wildly popular, and require wait lists or lotteries. The good news is you will have them all figured out by the time your child is eligible in the fall.
In the meantime, you'll want to start looking around at regular preschools. You can start here: http://www.greatschools.org/preschool/ and remember to look up places like park and recreation programs or other lower cost options.
