My son is a year and a half and I have had a baby sitter since he was a few months old. I'm considering putting him in Day Care so he can socialize with kids his age and do more group activities. I'm also considering Day Care because the baby sitter is becoming more and more unreliable every day. She is a family friend and I'm not sure if I would trust another person if I have to fire her. I live in the Belleview area and I'm trying to decide what the best route will be for my son. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Hello, Cecilia518, and welcome to the GreatSchools Parent Community.
I think you're answering your own question. The choice between a small home day care or babysitter versus a larger one is generally a personal one. But if your babysitter is unreliable, the benefits of personalized care is pretty much gone. Day care providers range in size, but many will help him transition to a preschool environment and the teachers can be better educated in early childhood education.
You can find out information on different philosophies here: http://www.greatschools.org/preschool/
And even more importantly, you can type in your zip code and find some schools in your area to visit.
Just a thought, if your babysitter is maybe overwhelmed, you could put your child in twice a week and let the sitter have him three times a week. Or, three times for daycare and twice a week for sitter. You still get the socialization and you don't have to outright fire the babysitter. May help since she is a family friend and you can save the friendship as well. Just a thought. Hope your decision comes easy.83206
I have worked in the field of Early Childhood Education for many years and the decision must be yours. It is important to send the message to your child that you are comfortable leaving him in the care of his teachers. I recommend you do some research on early childhood programs in your area. Be sure to look for their license to operate and find out if their program is Nationally (or State) Accredited. Schedule to tour at least 3 different programs before making your decision. Be sure to ask about teacher credentials, that the teachers hold, in the classroom your child would be in specifically. You are your child' first, and most important, educator. Best wishes with whatever your decision is. 83208
It may help first to understand the different types of daycare options you have available in your area. I.e. family daycare or group family daycare (both home settings), small day care centers (commercial site but fewer children allowed usually) or large day care centers. know that "home day care" does NOT mean babysitter. they are two very different things. as a center Director I can tell you that patience, compassion and a love for children coupled with a few child development courses would be much more valuable than a certified teacher. Development is key at that age. Every State has different regulations so check with your local Child Care Council as they are normally a great resource and happy to help answer questions for you. Good luck!83239
