Fifth grade nonfiction writing samples
Learning to write nonfiction is increasingly important for school success. These writing samples show what good fifth grade writing looks like.

When it comes to writing, fifth grade is a red-letter year. To prepare for the demands of high school and college writing, fifth graders should be mastering skills required for strong nonfiction writing. Particularly given the recent adoption by most states of the Common Core Standards, students should be learning these three styles of writing as outlined by the Standards:
Informative/explanatory writing, which conveys information accurately with facts, details, and supportive information.
Narratives, which describe an experience in a personal voice.
Opinion pieces, which encourage readers to accept the writer’s beliefs or opinions.
