The beauty of the Montessori method, for our children, has been that it provides an engaging work environment where the kids can explore their "works" and are encouraged to delve deeper into the subjects that spark interest. It allows time for focussed learning without distractions and transitions. My children come home interested in the history, art, music and math they might be doing in the class. There are 2-3 teachers in the 1-3rd grade classroom and they all know and work with the kids so well. We were just told about an issue that arose with some kids playing soccer during recess. I was impressed how the teachers took the group aside and had the kids come up with solutions and empowered them to problem solve. Children are treated with dignity and held accountable for themselves. They come home with great communication skills and I hear them using language of respect for others. The other great benefit of the school is the very flexible after school program. For working parents it was a relief to have that option.
Both of my daughters have been through the primary program and we could not be happier. It is probably not the best choice for you if you are a helicopter parent who wants to do everything for your child. If you want your child to learn independently this school will show them how in the most nurturing and secure way. We love that they teach the children manners as part of the curriculum, so they learn the importance of the perspective of their peers. Their focus grows to that larger community beyond "me and mine" Send your three year old to this school. You will love it when they come home and help you fold the laundry!
Perfect for some families. Not for everyone. Our child attends OSMS and enjoys it. The children there are very good to each other, at least from what we have seen. They are confident and secure and very supportive of each other. If you are looking for a Montessori school that adheres to a very rigid Montessori philosophy, this is your school. If you are looking for a classroom where parents are invited to participate with their child's education, this may not be for you. We have mixed feelings about the rigidity, and we wish they were more comforting for sad children. More classroom participation opportunities would also be nice. Parents are not welcome to participate in ordinary classroom activities -- even in preschool and kindergarten. Parent committees appear somewhat disorganized and meet very irregularly. On the other hand, the teachers are extremely competent and we have no worries about bullying -- which could easily be a problem for our child at another school. Our child is definitely becoming more confident and independent and, as far as academics go, we certainly feel that this school provides a good, solid foundation for future success.
OSMS is an amazing school. We are so happy to be part of this cooperative montessori school. The teachers are committed to the montessori method but are also flexible in adapting to each child's needs. This is such a nurturing enviroment; both of our children are so happy to be here.
What a wonderful school. Our oldest son went through the primary program and we saw tremendous growth and amazing accomplishments from him over the years. There were times when no progress seemed to be occurring then a burst of achievement would follow. The teachers were fully committed to working with him and helping to draw out the best in him...always. We couldn't be happier. Our second son is also in the primary program and our youngest daughter will start when she turns 3. Expect the best from this school and your child. You will be rewarded with a terrific outcome!
Our son is in his second year at Ocean State Montessori and we couldn't be happier. He loves going to school and has become so much more independent since starting. His teachers are warm and welcoming. The after school program and vacation camps make it a great option for working parents.
This is our fourth year at OSMS. Our older child was there from age 3 through kindergarten and our second child is now in the second year. We couldn't be happier. Our older child blossomed and grew and learned so much in his three years. The teachers are supportive, helpful and always available. There are good options for working parents in terms of after school care. And the parent community is down to earth and just a bunch of nice, good people. Keep in mind the Montessori model is not right for all kids. But we've been really satisfied with the school.
My sons have thrived at Ocean State Montessori. We have experienced both the 3-6 year old classrooms and the 1st-3rd grade classroom. The teachers are wonderful and the Montessori approach is concrete, practical and enables magical leaps in children's learning and understanding.
Fake cooperative school where the parents buy stuff for the classes, but don't have any say elsewhere. It was like torture for my 4 year old. Sure, they're all friendly and concerned when you meet them, but after that they're cold in the classroom. More interested in pushing the Montessori product than being concerned teachers. My son is so much happier now that school is over, and is actually blooming more.
A cooperative montessori by design, this school is a great school. The teachers and faculty are great. There is a large parent involvement in the class and school. If you believe in montessori teachings, and your child is a good candidate in a montessori model, this is a school to consider. Being a cooperative montessori, the cost is half of a traditional montessori. However, the cost is supplemented from parents active participation. I like the montessori teaching in the early development years (up to kindergarten).
