the home school environment and the family atmosphere .All the children learn to respect and work with different age groups.Learn about their heritage along with others. My son has come along way since attending this school. They also try to accommodate family's with financial hardships by fund raising through out the year.

My Grandson just started at this school and he is making miraculous progress. He likes to go to school and is learning quicker than I ever expected. He's in Kindergarten and gets two recesses a day which he needs. They also study earth science by taking field trips and really examining the environment around them. I think the school offers structure but not at the expense of creativity. He was quickly washing out of Public School. I was dismayed at the attitude that pervades a lot of the Public schools now. I think that Lauren Spears has hit upon a good formula that promotes academic achievement but never at the expense of the individual. She's got it right!

Ms Spears dedication to children and culture, and her skills and enthusiasm as an educator, make this an afffirming and positive educational and growth experience for Native children. Particularly significant as our children suffer from the highest dropout rates in the US in many 'standard' public school settings. Bless her work.

Loren Spears had a vision that she carried out not only for her children, but for all children as well... Her dedication and love for each individual child, teaching them, supporting them, believing in them to be the best that they can be, has certainly been witnessed throughout the beginning of her dream. It has been a privilege and an honor for my son to attend Nuweetooun School, watching his growth, his desire to want to learn - becoming more and more confident in his journey along the way. Nuweetooun has so much to offer the children, from our traditional culture, in ways of learning, intergrated with the current ways of learning today. Valuable lessons to say the least. It is all hand in hand!!! We are truly blessed to have the love and desire for greatness, (for our children) from Loren, the staff members, the Founders of Tomaquag Museum and I must not leave out the parents in recognizing the vision, this great school, NUWEETOOUN and coming together in unity! Thank you Great Spirit for all involved, may Nuweetooun School continue to flourish academically, traditionally, creatively and with love...

Great school! Helps our Native children to stay proud of their heritage, gain self esteem and to learn of other cultures. The children learn the tribal language as well as traditional games, songs, dance, drumming and flute playing. They learn academics in an interactive setting. I am so proud of Loren Spears, Nuweetooun Director, for fulfilling her dream and offering this school to our tribal community as well as the outside communities. Thank you Loren, keep up the great work.

Nuweetooun school is a wonderful nurturing environment for Native students. When I taught in the Ethnic Studies dept at Brown Univ, and in the Anthro/Soc dept at URI, my students would go down and volunteer at the school, and they always had a wonderful experience with the students and instructors at Nuweetooun

Loren worked incredibly hard to build her school almost single handidly. She has given Native students an opportunity to learn their language, song, dance and so many other things native to themselves along with the everyday accademics which are learned in public schools.More importantly be proud of who you are.Lauren goes so far out on a limb to bring these children the best knowledge she can. Also the individual attention each student gets is incredible.Nia:wen Kowa Lauren

This School not only teaches conventional, but also teaches cultural Native American! If this school was open when my children were young I would definatly send them here and NOT to a public school! I am on the board of this school because I believe in what they are doing is wonderful!

Nuweetooun School addresses, with appreciable success, the academic needs of young people who might be at risk in the public educational system. The staff blends a conventional teaching structure and Native American history/culture content to strengthen students' respect for and sense of pride and value in their world of yesterday, today and tomorrow, and to discover their valid place in the larger community going forward.

Nuweetooun School promotes inquiry learning in authentic contexts, inviting children to explore and participate in the world around them. Students are empowered to create positive change and persevere when faced with obstacles. The staff operates on a grassroots budget, fueled by a conviction that today's youth, when equipped with confidence and wisdom, will lead this nation into a bright future.

The mission of the school is to educate their youth in a respectful engaging environment. It is necessary for young people to have a comfortable accepting environment in which to learn. An environment that promotes experiential learning and honors individual differences and learning styles should definately receive our support. The fact that the school also incorporates spiritual and cultural learning is also a strong point.

Nuweeton is a small mixed age school that focuses on a love of learning, Narragansett identity, recognises that each child has individual gifts and sees learning as a shared, cooperative adventure. Native children who cannot find or celebrate their heritage in a regular public school learn fully and thrive here. Teachers are dedicated to children, to the curriculum that joyfully integrates native skills and knowledge in all subjects, and the recognition of individual needs and talents. As a college professor, it is a pleasure and deeply moving to watch the excitiment that learning generates in this special place.

Nuweetooun School is the only elementary school in New England dedicated to teaching, preserving, and honoring the traditions and culture of the Native American population. In addition to core curriculum standards, Nuweetooun's dedication to create a balanced education for Native children in a small, hands-on environment is a wonderful example for other communities.

Nuweetooun School is doing such a great job teaching our Tribal children. They don't just learn about their heritqge and the same teaching as all other schools, but they also instill love of nature and what it means to be a Narragansett child thereby developing a strong sense of who they are having them become great adult with pride and honor. I have so much respect for the way this school gives so much to their students.

Nuweetooun School in unique in a sense that it teaches children the standard American curriculum alongside the traditional ways of Eastern Indigenous People of the United States. Owned by a member of the Narragansett Indian Tribe, Nuweetooun School is able to provide the knowledge of Native ancestors (such as medicinal plants and Native American history and culture) that are not normally taught in American schools or even tribally run schools. Nuweetooun is a place for all students, Native and non-Native, where they can come together to build stronger bonds between these two cultures and learn a little more about each other each day. This is the traditional way of our Native people.

Nuweetooun school has made such a difference in my son's life. He looks forward to going to school EVERY day. I feel that the dedication of the staff is crucial to how successful the school is. The 'whole child' methods at the school really work. I am also impressed with the openness of the school, they do not discriminate and the students are taught a great respect for themselves and each other as well as the world. Amazing.

Both my nephews attend the Nuweetooun school. It's a great environment for the children to develop within the small teacher/student ratio, where they receive proper attentive education and learning experiences. Given that its cultural aspect of being a private school for Native American students, it also provides that important Native cultural perspective in the classroom, where the young ones can learn about their heritage, language, and background outside of home.
