Asa Messer has great leadership, a collaborative team of teachers, and engaged and striving students. Blended learning is implemented at nearly all grade levels which allows differentiation of student learning and small group, face-to-face time with teachers. Two months into first grade and my daughter is reading at a second grade level along with 5 other students in her class. They are all being challenged through blended learning (and their fantastic teacher!). We are having a wonderful, rich experience at our neighborhood school. Don't believe the myths and negative hype about Providence's public schools. Talk to parents and visit the schools! Sadly the district does NO PR of the positive things happening in our public schools.

Handles bullying effectively: Agree

The only reason I didn't say strongly agree is because we haven't had any issues with bullying. They talk a lot about kindness at Messer. At some point bullying will come up -- it just hasn't yet.

Supports LD students: Strongly agree

Blended learning allows teachers to meet children where they are and to individualize their education.

Effective school leaders: Strongly agree

The principal won the Rhode Island state Principal of the Year award this year. Previously she had won the city/district award. She is a strong, fair, flexible and collaborative leader.

Develops character: Strongly agree

This school has a high English language learner (ELL) population and special education population. The student body is extremely diverse culturally. Going to school with so many children of differing backgrounds is growing my daughter's empathy and compassion. The school focuses the children on their goals, which makes the kids self-reflective! Love it.

Teacher effectiveness: Strongly agree

We have had amazing teachers in both kindergarten and first grade so far. They are dedicated, reflective in their practice, and very responsive whenever i email them with a question or concern!

Amount of homework: Agree

So far so good. Daughter had a LOT of homework in kindergarten -- I think they were trying to get all them all caught up -- but this year in first grade the homework has tapered off. Lots of flash cards and reading a new book every week along with some written work.

This school is awful. They have 2 high sets of stairs that they don't even shovel for the kids and many have fallen and gotten hurt. I know I caught one child falling down them while I was walking back up them. School property should be managed "by the school". Kids parents send them to school very sick and spread their sickness to all others. And the school does nothing and wants them to come in like that. Not to mention head lice and just yesterday found out that my grandsons class has scabies 2 students and at least 1 teacher and the school still wants them to go in and catch it without taking precaution. Kids are at risk of getting hit and so many almost have since the parking is so crazy there. It's horrible someone should really investigate this school. PLEASE!!
