The school unfortunately just doesn't have an appropriate program for children with LD issues. The SLP services are not integrated into the classroom and the sizing of least restrictive classes / mixed classes are far too large. Compounding this is the administrations dismissive attitudes toward finding better ways to teach or improve services for LD kids. They generalize services and complain at IEP meetings that they are 'only a public school' . However, in most cases placement at this school does not meet FAPE standards for LD kids and the district has done little to enable children or parents to improve access to basic education and needed therapy services. instead aids are put in classes for children with severe behavioral issues. I view this as firefighting while the issues for LD kids continue to exponentially grow throughout their entire academic career. Parents are faced with the choice of accepting inappropriate services or paying for a private placement or worse a settlement for FAPE. Basic improvements in teaching how LD kids learn as well as social, speech and sensory therapies are urgently needed in order to improve this school and district.
My son went to this school for 1st grade and he really enjoyed his teacher. The school counselor was great when they were made aware that his father was joining the service and he was gone for 6 months out of the school year. They were really helpful when he was having a hard day. Also, the school always had some sort of community charity going on. Very happy with this school system.
Hugh Cole is a great school... Healthy yet tasty lunch food... Great teachers... A Friendly environment...
My child isa first grade student in ms. Velleca's class. He loves going to school everyday. Last year my husband died suddenly, and all the parents an staff, worked out meals, schedules, of when te meals would be delivered. I greatly appreciat what very one has done for my family during this crisis that was so unexpected. I don't know what i would've don without the help of everyone. I was blessed, with all of their help. Thank you to everyone who helped out, you all were amazing to our family!
We have recently moved to this school & so far so good. The kids seem to be very happy & are adjusting well. I am just getting to know all the teachers & staff, they are all very welcoming. We look forward to creating some great memories in the years to come.
