We love Merton! The teachers are supportive and encouraging, and go above and beyond daily. My second grader's classroom regularly Skypes with a classroom in Iowa, a modern day, realtime version of pen pal-ing. All classrooms have smartboards, which the kids interact with daily. The principal, Mr. Budisch, knows all the kids and the kids love him. He is supportive and interactive with the teachers, students and parents. He keeps current on technology and teaching methodology, and recently attended a conference on how advances in technology will affect how and what our children are learning, and what they should be learning. At the end of the school year, the kindergarteners pick an animal to write a report on, to be accompanied by a homemade model of the animal. The first graders create wagons from household materials (no premade wheels) and have a parade around the school. The things the school has enabled my children to do and to think are amazing, especially when compared to the education I received 20+ years ago.

I really feel the school is extremely child-centered. The teachers and principal genuinely care and are motivated to give the children the best they can. There are a lot of opportunities for children to pursue different interests, whether they are sport, art or academically centered. There are programs to help challenge gifted or accelerated learners and there are programs for special needs children as well. The parents are welcome in the school as volunteers and I believe the attendance for a volunteer orientation meeting this year was 180 parents! I frequently hear parents say that they moved to this area because of the reputation of not just the high school, but of the primary school as well. We are very happy to be in this school.

If parents are willing to drive the extra distance, why wouldn't they be allowed to choose? Every school is not a match for every child and parents know their children best ... More »

Definitely! I believe that families should be allowed to attend any school they want, because there are some who went to a good school and parents want what's best for their kids. Even education.

Families should be able to attend any school they wish.
