Ketchikan High School is good only for kids who excel naturally. If a student does not learn independently, he is going to be in trouble here. 70 dropouts for the year 2006 is shameful. The school seems to have a no-care attitude, especially regarding natives (the geneal consensus is: it's their culture) and kids new to the district. There seems to be a severe lack of caring on the school's part for these kids. They are happy to ignore them until they finally give up---and when the student transfers to Revilla, the alternate choice in town, the school happily signs off and marks that student as a 'transfer'--thereby avoiding have to account for the student as a dropout. Every kid who gives up and leaves K-High is the school's failure, and there is a very high percentage of these.

Ketchikan High School (Kayhi for most of us) is a really good school. Larry Eklund the principal is a great guy that really works hard and listens to parents, teachers, and students alike. As for Extracurricular activities there are plenty. There are many things for the kids. Maritime is a favorite and there always seems to be a list to get into this class. My son travels with his football team all over the state as with his wrestling team. There is a big emphasis on basketball in this town but that doesnt really leave anything out. Soccer football basketball and baseball are all favorites. Teachers are readily available for any parent as are there email addresses for any of us parents that need them.

This school has some excellent teachers, but lacks vocational classes (the only ones I'm aware of Kayhi offering are vocational medicine and automotive shop), and is dropping funding for extracurricular activities such as drama clubs, and even travel for established activities like basketball, and band. I fear that soon there will be no extracurricular activities at all. Otherwise, this is a good school, and a good choice for any student who works well in a typical high school environment.

I recently went to this school and I think that you guys do the best job on the teaching us. Mrs Neuheart and Mrs.Ropell helped me the most.Thank you.

If parents are willing to drive the extra distance, why wouldn't they be allowed to choose? Every school is not a match for every child and parents know their children best ... More »

Definitely! I believe that families should be allowed to attend any school they want, because there are some who went to a good school and parents want what's best for their kids. Even education.

Families should be able to attend any school they wish.
