Leadership is everything. I witnessed the change from the principal that made it a Blue Ribbon school (happily that leader is still in the district, but at a higher school, now). That leader is a tough act to follow. The "bones" of the school are still good, it just needs excellent leadership to reach the level it was at a few years ago. As a parent volunteer, I saw how a strong leader correctly handles instances of bullying or discrimination so that they were practically non-existent. A wonderful example and an all-inclusive environment for learning was established and could be again.
Blue Bell Elementary has a problem with racism. African American children are not treated as equal at all! My child now hates going to school. Whites, oriental as well as Indian are treated better than the African American children. It is a shame that racism is still so prevalent in society today. All the problems that this country is having, the individuals here still have the time for racism! This is a disgrace! Do not let the name of name Wissahickon School District fool you. Find another school district to place your child of color. I know this is the way that the district wants it, but the mental well-being of your child is way more important!
BB Elem is a wonderful school, excellent teachers that care and want the students to succeed, whether it is enrichment or special needs. Numerous activities for all interests, great parent involvement! BBElem also prepared our daugthers for a comfortable transition to Middle School.
This school may have been a blue ribbon school under the previous administration but is now far from it. Physically abusive special needs children rule the school and create an unstable learning environment. The principle hides in her office and hopes that it will all magically go away as she denies the existence. Parents are treated as intruders from the moment they walk through the door and are told repeatedly that volunteering at the school is a privilege that can be taken away. This school is spiraling out of control. Don't be fooled by the Wissahickon School District label all schools in the district are not equal.
