Shaw School is a wonderful school with talented teachers, an efficient and knowledgeable superintendent, and a high level of parental involvement. Because we are so small (we have 18 students this year, in grades K-8 divided between two multi-age classrooms) our school can offer a variety of integrated learning opportunities, where children can learn hands on, often one-on-one with the teacher, a visiting scientist, or a guest writer, poet, or artist. We have visiting music and art teachers, Spanish taught two days a week beginning in kindergarten, and physical education that includes canoeing, cross-country, swimming, track and field, and field sports. Classroom experiences are supported with field research, camping and hiking, and trips to museums and other cultural resources. Drawback: because we are so small, we have no sports teams.

I was a student on Shaw Island for 7 years and I received the best education during that time I believe due to the ample one on one instruction by quality teachers. I was able to do and access a lot of opportunities most children aren't able to in elementary school. I reflect on it with priviledge to be one of the remaining few Americans to have attended a one room school house in such a modern industrialized country. I would highly recommend this school, (if you can transition to island life), to anyone who is considering moving to Shaw Island.
