In response to the locker situation below, this is a district issue, not one for the parent's association so I do not feel that was a fair criticsm of the HIP board. The 8th grade students recently took a PSAT test to prepare them for the real thing...this was funded by HIP. The aides in the classrooms are funded by HIP. The algebra tutoring for middle school is funded by HIP. The money that is raised is used daily to enrich the children's experience at this school. Unfortunately, the parents cannot change the locker situation, which is likely due to the limited space available.

Hesby has been an incredible place for my children. Honors classes, great caring teachers and a school of friends they feel comfortable with. HIP, the parents group is amazing. Through their fund-raising we are able to offer our students, PE, guidance counslors, classroom aids, field trips and great parties and BBQ's and so much more. Its funny when people say HIP is making decisions basked on 'the board' alone....but in fact I know HIP send out questioners to the parents and staff asking what their priorities are. And then made those priority's, realities at Hesby. The few who complain at Hesby are just the ones you have at every school, always want to say its done wrong, but never step up to do anything to help. Dont let them fool you. Hesby is incredible. Look at our test scores, look at out happy students. Hesbys has done it right!

Being that this is still a rather newly revamped school it has not yet worked out some of it's issues. These problems show up in odd ways such as lockers that are too small to hold the amount of books the kids have. This then forces kids to lug around backpacks that are far too heavy for them to cary. The desks can't house the backpacks so they get left outside in the rain. The combination locks don't work etc. This is just an example of how the problems manifest into much bigger issues. The HIP parents mean well but they seem to be running a government style financial institution where they collect money like crazy and then spend it very badly in many cases. The fact is that the HIP board won't listen to anyone but themselves.

Hesby is a wonderful school. Every year seems to be getting better and better. I am so impressed with the quality of the teachers, their interest and involvement with the kids and their dedication to the job! Initially, I was a little surprised by the API scores for Hesby. Although they are high, they seemed a little off of what I have observed in the classrooms and my informal comparison to other top elementary schools in the area (i.e. Lanai, Carpenter, etc). I discovered that the reason Hesby scores do not dwarf these other schools is that the Hesby score is based on the elementary and middle school combined (K-8), compared to the other schools which are just K-5. In LAUSD, K-5 scores tend to be much higher than middle school scores. Improtant to recognize for anyone who is trying to evaluate the meaning of the test scores.
