Last year was my first year at Downing Elementary School, and I am honored to be the principal of this great school. Because we focus on increasing student learning and achievement as our top priority, we made the decision to limit classroom field trips to two field trips per class per year. Our classes took many exciting field trips this past year to the zoo, to the Children's Theater, and to the beach to mention only a few. Our 4th and 5th grade students attend an outstanding Outdoor Education Camp each spring for three days. As a principal, I support enriching the classroom experience with relevant field experiences that extend learning. In regards to our new Voluntary Uniform Program, we have made the decision to allow parents to decide if they would like to have their children wear uniforms to school or opt to dress their children according to our dress code policy. It is a voluntary uniform program, and its impact on student behavior and student achievement will be evaluated throughout the year. It was not introduced to create tension at our school. It is offered as an alternative.
The teachers and staff really respect the kids and my son had a great for kindergarten. He is above his grade level in both math and reading thanks to the teachers.

All three of my children attend this great school and obviously I am impressed with the teachers, principal and the care they show all of the students. My 8 year old son claimed he was happy this school was chosen for him. Some of the teachers have their own children attending this same school, which says it all!

My son has attended Downing since Head Start and is currently in 3rd grade. The K-1 program is a great opportunity for students to build friendships and not be timid to ask for help. The foreign language program offers 3 different languages which is a great jump start for students. The PTA has a great presence and the Boys & Girls Club is right next door and offers before and after school programs. Downing also has several Highly Capable programs for children that excel. I would recommend this school to all parents new to the community or looking for a great school with exceptional opportunity for their child.
