This is a good school if your child is an IB student because teachers pay close attention to them . And because of law and NCLB, your special ed student would do well here, too. If you have a kid in the 'middle'---forget it. They become disenchanted and disinterested in school because they don't fit into the two categories above. This school really needs to treat all students more equally.
York is a school with a lot of potential, however the current principal is not committed to improving the school. The school day begins too early for the kids. Too many of the teachers are not child centered, more concerned with guarding grades than creating successful kids. A recent renovation has proven to be a joke, just check out the locker rooms.

The academic programs and teach involvement is what prompted us to move to York High School district when we relocated from Hawaii. I have one special needs child who received the attention that was required for her to obtain a 'regular' diploma. I can honestly say that she would have not graduated had it not been for the program in this school. My son has been involved in the marching band and music program. He has also been involved in the JROTC program. I have seen him mature under the tutelage of these teachers. The AP Program that is offered is going to assist him as he goes onto college after he graduates in 2008. If any one is looking for a top notch high school for their children, York High is it.

My child is a senior at York, an advanced placement student, college bound next year. I object to much about the school. Overinvolved parents exercise undue influence on athletic department decisions and access to other opportunities. As noted by a previous poster, these parents' behavior is not addressed by the principal even when it negatively affects students. School hours begin and end too early, resulting in sleepy adolescents who get out of school in the early afternoon, long before working parents come home. In general the school does not well accomodate working parents. The guidance counselor I've had contact with seems apathetic toward students. Many students I've known have been allowed to fall through the cracks, with no one stepping forward with the message that the school cares about them or their success.
