As the parent of an academically gifted child, I would not recommend Smyrna High School. The administration seems to care more about keeping the status quo then promoting students who have an above-average intellect. Fortunately there are a (small) handful of educators that recognize true giftedness when they see it and encourage students, like my child, to aim high and reach their goals. If you are looking for a positive learning environment for an above average child, it would benefit you to to look beyond Smyrna. If you are content to accept mediocrity, then Smyrna shcools are the place for you!
Smyrna High School offers a positive learning environment. The teachers and administrators use a behavoir rewards system. Discipline does not become a major problem, while the students who are staying focused receive acknowledgement. The extracurricular activities and sports offer a creative and atheletic outlet for the students. Smyrna High School also focuses on keeping the students on track for college through several preparation methods.
Both of my children attended all 4 years of high school at Smyrna High. Smyrna stands out in leadership, from the opportunities the kids are given, to the character and quality of teachers. They are a cutting edge learning environment. The curriculum comes in all levels, including AP and College level (accredited) courses. The teachers are as well involved in leading extra curricular activities and community based projects. Pride in school,community and Self are exemplified at Smyrna High School. Outstanding extra circular activities, from Football,Softball,Soccer,Track,Golf,Wrestling, Field Hockey,FFA,FEA,Foreign language clubs,Chess club,YBPA,Cheerleading and a Dynamic Drama Club. The teachers are approachable for students or parents. The principals are seen continually and know the students by name. This is a School full of Pride,and rightly so. I recommend Smyrna High School to everyone. This has been the best education/life experience for my children.
Im a student a Smyrna High School and i would not choose any other school in the country. I play football and wrestle. The school cares alot about the students at Smyrna. If you are new to Delaware think about Smyrna try it out you never know!!!
