I am a teacher and also a parent of a student at Star Valley Middle School. This school has moved to institute the middle level concept over the past few years. The teaming approach of core area teachers sharing the same students is a huge plus. Each teacher also serves as an advisor to 30 students for the entire school year in a class called STARS (Students and Teachers Accepting Responsibility to Succeed). The STARS teacher keeps in close contact with parents/guardians throughout the school year concerning academic achievement, social skills, and any challenges a student may face. The administration is excellent and continually works to enable teacher and student success. The school follows an inclusion model for students with and IEP. Electives include music, art, shop, home ec., computers, and P.E. The school offers a host of extra-curricular activities including sports and an after-school program.

No. I have heard of teachers setting up FB pages on areas of study so students can use technology as a learning tool. All posts are public and private messages are disabled. I won't even friend former students. I do it as a rule-no hurt feelings.

No! As an educator, I don't want to be held responsible for what students are doing outside of the classroom.

Absolutely not. Most schools offer the homework question site through the school system. They do not need to be "friends" with their students through social networking sites.
