Southeastern Senior High School

This is, without a doubt, the best high school the the Springfield area. Administration in touch, teachers are motivated and successful, and students are active, well behaved learners. Physical resources have been kept in near perfect condition despite the age of the facilities. If I moved to Clark County, this is where I would want my kids to go to school. I am a substitute teacher that sees all schools in the county. This one deserfves all the kudos it receives.

Southeastern is a closed minded school that is obsessed with image. The teachers are conservative and although helpful, often fall prey to their personal emotions regarding students. This school has few AP courses and is overly sports oriented. Extra-curricular activities barring sports and agricultural clubs are practically non-existent or are mostly disregarded. Questioning and exploration are often spoken of but not encouraged. Parental involvement is encouraged but the over-response hinders the educational process. Students are not given sufficient amounts of academic and personal responsibility to allow them success in the world their hands are held the entire time by their attentive parents and the faculty. The administration is surly to students and unable to provide full services. The entire school means well but falls short.

Students often taught concepts in college prep classes that used to be taught only in college 2nd-level courses. Small, classic midwestern architecture high school (ca 1929 w/gilded auditorium, plus modern additions) that serves local village and generally two townships. Both high school and K-8 schools located within this self-contained, farming-based, bedroom village of ~2K people. Full spectrum of heartland society. [Quintessential small town America; South Charleston was chosen for '04 presidential 'Town Hall' debate and televised nationally.] Next to no serious discipline problems. Preponderance of conservative-leaning teachers, administrators, and school board members. Much better than average student moral/ethical standards and training for a public school. Easily accessible faculty/admin; many beloved teachers. With each class year having 55-75 students it's easy for parental involvement in school and community events. Except for basketball, few sports make cuts. Perennially strong girls athletics. Football and basketball supported and celebrated as if a mini-Ohio State University.
