When my children first started at Kahuku, there was an excellent principal Dr. Kalama, he was fair and kept the school running smoothly. For the past 5 years there has been a different Prinicipal and the school has greatly been reduced from the school it once was. Dr. Kalama would stand up for the school and the rights of the students to the District, the current principal does whatever they tell her to do whether it is in the best interest of the students or not. Most of the programs and opportunities that the students once had they are no longer able to do, such as the 4th grade Big Island trip and the 5th grade Camp Pupukea that has been a tradition for many many years. There is some good teachers but they can only do so much with such limited means. A once Great School is only Average now!

This is one of the special schools left in our country, it could be a model for the rest of the world were people of all races get along and don't even care where your from or what race you are. Even though Mr. Kalama is gone, the school still has his spirit of aloha and respect for each other. If you ever want to visit a school where teachers and parents take their children's education seriously, you might want to visit one day.

Because of the high expectations and the quality of education here my daughter upon moving in the 2nd/3rd grade has been since considered ahead of her class and is in the gifted program here in Oregon. She developed a love of reading in the Kidnergarten there where they are expected to read before Christmas that first year. Mr. Kalama had said that we are the ones that put limitations on our kids and ourselves but the kids have proven time and again that if we expect them to act/perform at a high level they will rise to the occasion...there are no limits on what they can do...only the ones we put on them.

Kahuku Elementary School is a very good school. The teachers care if the children learn and take extra time out with students if its a must. The Principal Mr. Kalama also set terrific guidelines and taught respect to the children for other people. You can feel this attitude when you enter into the school grounds.
