The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.
I have two children in the Zalma school district. One in junior high and one in grade school. The school has been excellent to help me with problems that we have. I would recommend this school to anyone.
After 12 years of experiencing the education at Zalma I left the community to attend college, terrified that I would be arrive ill-prepared. Imagine my surprise to find that while I was not exposed to as many 'extras' as the students from larger, better equipped districts, when it came to the basics I was at least as well prepared and in many cases better prepared. Zalma did not have all of the 'bells and whistles' other districts had but what it did give me was a solid foundation in the fundamentals.
Zalma is called great, or good by folks that have not seen the outside world. I would estimate that only 50% of the top 10 students each year complete college. As far as extra activities... they haven't nothing behind the bare minimum sports and clubs. Students leave the school poorly prepared to compete in the sciences, math and reading. The school's library is 40 years out of date, and the grace of God kept the state from taking over the school just a few years ago. The biggest problem exist in the elementary grades as students reach jr/sr high without the ability to read at grade level.
As a former teacher and coach at Zalma I can honestly say that my time spent there was a very memorable and valuable experience for me. The community was one of the most caring and respectful groups that I have ever been involved with. The students proved to be very hard working, with a desire to learn and achieve. During my stay the staff was very friendly and involved with all aspects of the students education. I would highly recommend Zalma as a very good small school.
