MLK School not a good school. Please use other schools. Research other options. Especially if you from out of state.

I have spent four years of my life at MLK High School. My freshman and sophomore year I was enrolled in advance and gifted classes. My junior and senior year I was in the International Baccalaureate Program, IB for short. Before I was in the IB program I enjoyed my time at the school, the administrators were excellent seeing how they governed over 1,000 students. The new principal Kenn Baker is one of the best principals I have had, he actually cares about the students. The principal learned most of the senior class by name, well he knows my name. To be honest the education is lacking especially in the gifted classes. I have never been in a regular class but I can assume that if the gifted classes are lacking then the regular classes are definitely behind the bar. I would recommend enrolling in the pre- IB program because it offers an international education so the courses are college level and are extremely rigorous. A good work ethic is necessary to succeed in this program. If the student completes the program and passes all of their exams by a five then they will receive enough credits to become a sophomore in college. If you are considering enrolling your child in the IB program speak to the IB director of the school immediately and definitely make sure your students schedule is correct the first time.
My son has attended this school for 1.5 years and I must say that it has been issue after issue. The teachers and the administration have been very unresponsive. Communication is not a strong point between the teachers and students or the teachers and parents. I am desperately looking for other options.
My child will be a senior next year and I've been involved with the school each year. I understand if people have concerns but I also know that most parents don't participate in things where they can make a difference. Many don't attend parent teacher conferences. Most don't attend PTSA meetings. It's necessary to participate on a regular basis and not when something happens that you don't like. MLK is a good school - no worse than any others but each part needs to be willing to put in the work required to make it work.
