Monclova Elementary is a great school. It is an innovative and excellent school. This school is a pioneer among other area schools. Students needs are addressed and met as the individuals that they are. Early literacy skills are the foundations in grades K & 1. The five components of focus (Phonemic Awareness, alphabetic principle, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) are aligned with the latest in literacy research. These grades gracefully integrate all subject areas into the primary focus of foundational learning. Grades 2-4 take the lead in preparing students to be self-sufficient learners. The whole child is developed; academically, socially and emotionally. The parent involvement is not only warmly welcomed by all teachers and staff. The parents involved in this school are an integral part of making this school the EXCELLENT one that it is and has been for many, many years.

This school, academically, looks great on paper. Test scores are some of the best in the state. However, they employ old/traditional teaching methods that are very outdated in teaching children. These methods inherently foresake the life skills of self-esteem, positive motivation, resourcefulness, compassion, and diversity to name a few. Letter grades are given from the 1st grade on, spelling and grammar are subjects given the highest priority, and, in most cases, book reports do not start prior to 4th grade. There are many programs available that are more dynamic and have better results while maintaining the educational balance of academics and lifeskills. Multidisciplinary/cross curriculum teaching methods are very uncommon. Parents are involved as much as they can, however, it has never been the practice of this district to seek parent input in decision making. Parent involvement is discouraged and parents are not proactively informed.

Monclova elementary by far exceeds our expectations. The teachers, and staff are very helpful, and encouraging. Parent involvement has added to its success.
